Fishing General San Diego Waters.

Would like a boat that would be able to take me and 1 other person and most 2 other people out to At least 9 mile bank and back during the summer.

My friend owns a 22 foot sail boat with 6 hp outboard that we cruise out on flat days and have made 30 mile round trips.

Whats the smallest thing i could get away with.

Would an 18 foot bayliner do the trick?

Any size boat can go 9 miles. All depends on conditions.

I thought so as well. However i am looking for something that could be a long term family boat and maybe take me further.

I honestly am a newbie when it comes to boats.

Check out bdoutdoors.com. Lots of west coast fishing and boat discussion there. Someone there may have good input regarding the SD area waters.

Find people/s in you area to share fishing /boating expenses with, if possible, prior to making decisions , it'll help with trailering, dropping, maintenance, handling, ocean conditions and more.

Really depends on your budget. Seen guys in 16ft whaler out at the 43 in 5-6 rolling waves. And some won’t leave the harber in 45 cruisers. Learn the patterns and the 9 is easy. Plenty of smaller walk around s are good place to start 20-23.
pm if you have questions

I've seen guys fishing the Coronado islands on jetski's.....thats about 14 miles from San Diego harbor. I would think a 18-22' boat would is fine...just pick your days.

mexico can get really rough really quick, as with all waters. yes it is doable, but you will miss many good fishing days due to bad or questionable weather.

I fish on a jet ski from La Jolla to San Clemente....the weather is extremely predictable here. Most mornings are good and the wind picks up a bit after noon which can create a chop. There are plenty of boats on CL that would be a good option for you just depends on your budget. If you want to get to nine mile bank Iím assuming you want to get into the BFT/YFT but there is plenty of good fishing near shore as well.

Good Luck!
