Default Aloha Hawaii members!...I have some questions

Aloha,

A buddy told me this was the best board for everything about fishing Hawaii so I had to check it out! I am active Marine Corps and moving to Oahu with my wife in August. I grew up on the east coast of Florida and am an avid inshore and offshore angler.

I have read through a couple threads and understand the price/lack of options for buying out there but not having a boat isn't an option. Does anyone on here know how reliable the lemon lots are on the various bases? I am looking for anything in the 18-24ft range and don't want to pay more than $25k, am I going to be able to find anything?

Where are locations and how much does it cost to store a boat around Camp Smith? What are labor rates for mechanics?

Is the fishing really as good as advertised? I am most interested in Tuna, Mahi, and Wahoo (no, I don't know the local names yet). Can I expect to have success on most trips?

Is there anything you wish you knew before coming out there?

If anyone is active duty and knows the lay of the land, please feel free to DM me!

Thank you all in advance and tight lines!

Aloha
First...thank you for your Service.
i'am not sure about some of your questions as I live on Big Island (Hawaii),as far as boats look on Craig's list,Base news/ for sale items??,local marine shops,...you might also try a site called Bloody Decks. I'am guessing the military won't ship a boat over as house hold goods??as for storage I pay about 140 a mo.for a 24'boat.on Oahu??I don't know.on a good note you are arriving at high season.
Good luck Brad

here in kona the local yamaha/honda/volvo penta shop rates are $95 an hour all are factory trained and certified. would imagine similar rates on oahu. buyers market as boat prices currently depressed but ahi fever could set in and change conditions fast. leave pre concieved notions on the mainland about techniques and methods, keep an open mind stay humble and always go holo holo, not fishing cause kula kai is a trickster.

Pearl Harbor is right down the street from Camp Smith, you may be able to get marina space there. Probably dry storage as well. I never did very well trolling off the south shore, but spearfishing was ok. west or southwest can be good.......might run all day without a hit, or strike it big. Structure underwater is important. Try to link up with some guys with experience to get a feel for the areas.

Don't you hate it when answers come in forms of questions... Does the boat need to be family friendly? You'll be able to find something at your price range for sure if you aren't too interested in spending a bunch of time with wife/kids (less amenities) on the boat. I would start looking at all the Islands Craig Lists, that will give you a sense of your options.

Do you have an idea on where you will live? And then what side of the Island you will fish out of? I assume you are working at Camp Smith, but not sure where you will end up living.

Not terribly familiar with mobile mechanic rates; my strong advice is do everything yourself, at least up to any warranty type work.

Is the fishing as good as advertised? Wow what a loaded questions, could a grander show up in your spread, for sure, are you going to come home with fish every trip, maybe. The fishing is very cyclic, May thru September should be good, BUT you could get white washed and you might have a banner day if December. Learn how to catch live bait, preferably Opelu (mackerel scad) in a pinch Akule (big eyed scad) will do. Also bring those Florida skills for rigging Ballyhoo, they work here too. Though finding them isn't always easy.

Lastly; Bloody Decks Hawaii board was extremely active until Facebook, now Instagram and snap chat, since then the reports have dropped of to almost nothing. Worth a try, you'll get much more Oahu guys providing input.

Cheers
Pat
