Default July 4th Weekend Catalina Trip

Hello all,
I am going to be camping on Catalina July 5-7 and will take my Whaler if the weather permits. Anyone interested in buddy boating?

That sounds like an awesome time! We'll be in Long Beach for the 4-5th. Enjoying the harbor area & celebrations.

Maybe get some fishing in too.

Cool! Enjoy!

I am still considering taking my little Whaler over if the weather is good. I've been to Catalina once on it but that was a short day trip. This will be Friday the 5th through Sunday.

Default catalina trip

My boat isn't even close to ready but I really am interested in a similar trip. I am new to salt fishing and the cal coast and could use some advice and guidance. Where to start, what to take, and that stuff. Any thing specific would be great. I also am interested in a boat buddy that can help provide some security if I break down. I have a 20 chaparral WA. I know that my boat isn't the biggest one out there, but the previous owner claims to have made the trip several times in it.

Where do you usually launch from? Where do you live?

I usually launch from Channel Islands and go to Anacapa (if weather permits). My boat is much smaller than yours, so you know it is doable. I've been to Catalina once, Santa Cruz twice, and Anacapa almost thirty times.

Unfortunately, I have decided to not take my boat and just take the Catalina Express over for the weekend. This past Saturday, I went fishing and crabbing and had a few things happen that made me change my mind about taking the boat to Catalina for the weekend. First off, after dropping a crab pot, I put into drive, gave it throttle, the engine revved, but the boat did not move much. After doing that a couple more times, it took off. I think there was kelp wrapped around the prop. Second, after fishing a bit off a kelp bed (tied off to the kelp bed), we took off on our way back to the harbor and the engine overheated within a minute of taking off. This is the first time this engine (2010 Honda BF60 with 180 hours) overheated. I shut it down, tilted it up took some kelp off the skeg and used a zip tie to poke the pee hole (I did not notice if it was peeing before shutting down). After starting it up again, it ran great back to harbor. At the wash-down, I noticed that one of the anchor locker hinges was broken – completely came out of the door. Thus, I am not taking the boat to Catalina….

Lets keep in touch. If you ever want to try Channel Islands, let me know. If you are more South (LB), then lets do the Catalina crossing some time.

Andrey,

Did you ever figure out the issue with your engine? Sorry to hear about the troubles.

Also, I did not see this thread earlier, but we're actually leaving tomorrow early in the morning and going to try and get a mooring for the day tomorrow out at Catalina. This will be our first trip to Catalina in our Rinker!!

Hey Solidhadriel, I got all my stuff worked out and did a trip to Anacapa last week. How was the first trip to Catalina?

It was great and too short! We're ready to go back.

I hear great things about Anacapa. I bet it was beautiful!
