Default Purchasing a Documented Vessel in California

I'm having a company do the actual documentation, but that takes a while. I've used this company before but I was buying through a broker so all I had to do was sign. This is a private party cash sale.
The actual documentaion aside, what do I need to just legally take possession of the boat? On an undocumented boat it's pretty much just sign the pink slip and scribble out a bill of sale.In California, you don't need to have anything notarized. I don't think it's that easy on a Documented Vessel.
Anyone know for sure? Thanks.

Have the company doing the documentation give you a paper stating the documentation is in process.
That and a bill of sale should be all you need.
Every LEO around here is aware of the processing time for documentation.

I would carry a photo copy of the vessels document (under the sellers name) and a photo copy of the "article of transfer" (i.e. bill of sale).

This ^^^ This is what the bank told me to do last year as the CG was backed up a bit and it took about three months to get my documents.
