Default Sold my truck to carmax

Just thought I'd offer up my experience in case anyone else is thinking about selling. I bought a 2013 GMC Sierra SLT crew cab 4x4 new in 2012. It's been a great truck, only mechanical issue was the left front wheel bearing went out around 90k miles. I was in one accident with it, got rear ended one morning when the car behind me hydroplaned and slid sideways in to the rear of my truck while stopped at a light, $1400 damage that was repaired. Had 131k miles on it.

We inherited my wife's grandfather's farm truck a few years ago, a 2000 C3500 with a dump bed, 33k miles. Going to the lumberyard with a 12' bed is awesome, so we just don't use the Sierra much. With a reservation in place for a new Bronco, and the truck market pretty hot, we decided to see what we could get for the Sierra now.

Carvana offered $12,900, and I would have to meet them within 50 miles of Raleigh (about 2 hours away). They deducted more than the cost of the accident from the value in reaching that number.

vroom offered $15,546. They would come here to pick it up. The only reservation I had with vroom is that you sign all the papers, they pick up your vehicle, and in 2-3 days they send you a check. I'm sure it's fine, but not very comfortable for me.

The nearest carmax locations are in Greenville or Wilmington, NC, both about 2 hours away. I made a reservation at the Wilmington location for Saturday at 1. I arrived and was greeted by a pleasant young lady, we discussed a few things and she got a "device" and we went out to the truck. She said with covid their policy is that they won't touch the vehicle. So I had to open doors, hood, tailgate. She took many pics, and I assume video as she had me start it. When done, all info goes off to one of their buyers. She said we'll have an offer in 15-20 minutes. I waited in my truck rather than hanging out inside, and she called me in less than 15 minutes, said the offer was ready. I went inside and we sat at a computer station (both wearing masks with a plexiglass screen between us). She walked thru their checklist, everything was OK. Their offer was $16,500, good for 7 days. In total this took maybe 40 minutes.

My wife is 2 hours away, so I told her to come on, went and ran a few errands while waiting. I went back to carmax about 40 minutes before my wife arrived and started the process of selling (had truck before we married, so title in my name only). A second pleasant young lady worked with me this time, she took it for a test drive a couple of blocks down the street, came back, and we wrapped up the paperwork. My wife arrived about 5 minutes before we finished up, so I had her move all the remaining stuff out of the truck and in to our Yukon. About the time she finished that I walked out check in hand. Total time about 45 minutes. A grand total of less than 90 minutes start to finish.

Then my wife said "you know some kid is going to buy it and squat it." I felt a bit bad for old blue after that!

tldr;

Carvana: $12,900
vroom: $15,546
Carmax: $16,500

Nice deal. I have heard Carvana pays more than the others on 12-24 month old vehicles in FL, but there is nothing easier than dealing with CARMAX.

Kbb had dealer retail high teens to low 20's. Other 13's on carmax are crazy high, mid 20's+, the only comparable trim has only 80k miles though.

Maybe Carmax varies with locality. I have taken 4 vehicles for appraisal to sell at my local Carmax and they are consistently the lowest price. I'm at the point now where I don't think I will waste anymore time on them. Glad your experience was good though.

Sold vehicles to both Carvanna and Vroom lately. On first deal, Carvanna was highest. Transaction was super simple. Second deal, Vroom was way higher than anybody else. Process was much more labor intensive but was worth it.

When you say intensive ? Do you mean just the process ? Did you get paid in timely manor ? Thanks in advance !

Last car I sold was a 2014 Honda minivan. Got $1000 more selling private party than any of the car buy places. Carmax was the closest though. I only buy used cars and it’s often hard to find the right ones because everyone just trades or sells to a dealer. I wish more folks would sell private party. They would get more for their car and buyers would get much better prices.

I may have gotten more selling it myself, but my time is worth something to me. I really didn't want to deal with a bunch of strangers crawling around my truck only to find they can't get the money. The virus situation only adds to that.

Not to mention dealing with the calls a month after selling it that's got this that or the other thing wrong with it.

Should have went across the street. I would have given you $17k and it would have taken you all of 10 minutes if you had the title. (Wholesale Direct)

Directly across the street from car max in Wilmington. Big flashy new electric sign. Says 5 minute appraisals.....

glad you had a good experience with car max. We are able to beat 80% of their offers and our customers tell us they love the process more than carmax. Carvana carmax vroom occasionally mess up and pay way too much but they aren’t consistent or the best outlet. most of the time if you find a reputable big local dealer they pay more.

Fair enough, but from 2 hrs away I have no idea who you are or if you're reputable. Not going to stop in because of a flashy sign.

I just sold my 2019 leased Ram 1500 to my local Dodge dealer for a profit. Way better than having to pay to turn it in next year when the lease was supposed to be up. The used market is crazy high right now!

interesting, I got a decent price for the wife's SUV from Carvana. We have an electronic title for that vehicle. They say it has to be paper. I guess then, have to go to tax collector and have one printed

So these places don't even have a mechanic look at your car before they buy? That seems crazy.

I wish I had know... this was exactly the vehicle I am looking for and can't find. Would have even paid you more than T-bone.
