Tire pressure
 
Hi
single axle tires looked low, they where at 45#.... brought them up to 55#....
total trailer and boat is about 3200# less tung 2800#,, 1400# +- per tire, right?

tire label reads 65# max.... where should I inflate to?
these are not radial tires (I think if that matters)

Max always. Inflate when cold.

^^What he said. Cold tire and inflate to the max # that's printed on the sidewall.

Under inflated tires get hot and will blowout.

With my made traveltrailer tirepressure, calculator, set to American, so 10% on towbar, it comes to 40 psi/ 2.8 bar. This is with maximum reserve for your 3200lbs, with 320lbs on towbar.
used calculation for radial tires, and assumed speedcode Q. If for instance ST orspeedcode N. You better use higher pressure, write it then here, and I recalculate.

I'm well aware of the conventional wisdom here on trailer tire inflation. However, why did my triple axle come with tires rated for 80 psi and a sticker on the trailer saying recommended inflation of 65 psi? This was new from the factory and a high quality trailer.

Sounds like someone upgraded the tires from what the original sticker was printed for. Do not run a 85psi tire with 65psi! But, make sure the rim and valve stem match the 80psi.

Definitely need the heavy duty valve stems on those E rated or higher tires. That's too much pressure for a rubber stem. Make sure they're brass.

Trailers with boats, have the advantage, that once you know the total weight( by weighing), it stays the same during the years.
and my calculation was for radial tires, for diagonal tires it would calculate even lower pressure.
but estimating the weight, as you probably did, is dangerous, weighing often shows it more weight.

and boats are tremble resistant, my calc is for traveltrailers, wich at to high pressure, screws tremle loose, so reason for not using max of tire.

For 80 psi Highpressure-snapp in valves of the TR600HP series are sufficiŽnt, but metal valves are even better.
normal valves ( TR 400 serie) ar made for max cold pressure of 65 to 70 psi. So would ve enaugh for topicstarter. But dont screw tmps-sensors on them

Just so you know, I appreciate the math you're doing. But you've got to realize where you are. These guys are max pressure all the time, damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. They run max pressure on lawn mowers, personal vehicles, even their kids bicycles. They put valve stems on power wheels to inflate the plastic wheels. If it's got anything touching the ground, it has to be max pressure, no exceptions. :nono::grin:

Only on trailer tires.

Boats have to be put in the water, and underground can be soft. Then low pressure is needed to prefent the tires digging in.

The pressure in the tire should correlate to the load being carried. Not the max pressure.. If over inflated, the tire will ride on center of tread and wear tires out faster, as well as resulting in a bouncier ride.

just like every vehicle has a printed label in the door with what the psi should be on the tires, not the max psi on sidewall. That is just a do not go over. They put it on the door sticker so tire wears and rides evenly.

A tire inflated to the load being carried will not cause over heating as it is appropriate to the load.

That is a true statement! However, how many boats on trailers are out there that arenít pretty close or right at max load of the tires when fully loaded?

I am sure there are many! OP said his boat was 3200lbs, and his load range d tire is rated for 2500lbs each. So if it was me I wouldn't max tire pressure.

My VIP Deckliner is a tandem axle trailer because the outboard versions were under the limits of a single axle trailer but the I/O's (like I have) were so close to 3500lbs with the trailer included that they were put on tandems. So my boat and trailer with no loadout would be nearly max on a single but ends up being able to carry another boat on top of it because it's on a tandem. I tried to use that tire logic in another thread and you'd have thought I said OJ was innocent.

i had know idea it would get this involved..... Iím going with max pressure but I do appreciate all the info...
FYI I did weigh the whole rig at the townís transfer station and used the old bathroom scale trick to set the tongue weight..
All concrete ramps...

I hauled 70 mi. At max pressure this morning for this... LOL
