Tips on a truck or SUV that will tow 12K? And be OK sitting most of the time
 
Got a new boat on the radar, only thing is it's heavy... trailer and boat will have me at around 12K pounds. Needs to have space for 2 adults up front and 2 kids in carseats in back. No HOA here, so any truck or SUV is fine. Main constraint is I'm trying to keep the budget under 20K and have a vehicle that is alright sitting most of the time. I work from home so it will likely just end up staying hooked up to the boat, and used once/twice a week when we take the boat out. Open to recommendations!

Id say you probably need a 3/4 ton diesel at least. A gasser might do alright if it's not a super long drive. We sold a 2014 ram 2500 6.4l crew cab 4x4 for 20k. You'd probably have to go a little older or higher miles to get a diesel for 20k.

Trying to figure out if a 3/4 ton diesel would be alright sitting with short trips. Boat ramps within 10 miles. Boat's too wide to trailer to the Keys, so I'd really only be towing it locally. I'd rather go gas, that truck you sold the Ram 2500 6.4L has come up on my vehicle searches a few times.

My brother uses a gas Chevy 2500 for similar situation with farm equipment and the occasional 50 mile trip to Columbia.

Any of the gas 3/4 tons will serve well for that application. Diesel really shines when you get on the interstate for extended periods of time. Gas is great for most other needs, especially when that includes finding something decent at or under $20K.

Definitely hold out on a crew cab. Anything extended cab will be painful when dealing with car seats.

3/4 Ton gasser with some stabil in the tank is your answer, diesel + infrequent use + short trips = problems.

Appreciate all the feedback guys. Will make sure to hold out for a crew cab. Is there a SUV that is rated to pull this load? My research is coming up empty. As for a 3/4 ton gas truck, any specific manufacturers or models I should look at more closely for a gas 3/4 ton? Trying to get something as reliable as possible. This is totally out of my wheelhouse.

Early 2000ís Chevy/GMC with the 8.1L and Allison trans. I been doing just that with mine for years with no problems at all. I just some fuel stabilizer in on each fill up. Knock on wood never a problem.

I'm not sure of their specific rating but a Ford Excursion with the V-10 gas motor would handle that with ease

Texas 2500 Suburban is exactly what I"ve been looking for, holding out for 4x4 and leather... but everything else is there. Read those early 2000-03 8.1L with the 4.xx rear end are rated to 12K. Question about that 8.1L and Allison combo I was reading the Allison didn't come equipped on the Excursions, it was a 4L85 or 4L80 in the 8.1's is that right? And just the 2500 pickup trucks had the 8.1L and Allison?

It's 4x4

leather upgrade would be required anyway because of the age.

No allison in anything ford. Transmission in those is solid though.

Likely to find a newer pickup with better options than you are to find a good 8.1 Suburban or V10 Expedition. Both have been out of production for a while. Personally short trips to the ramp, I would prefer a pickup, for ease of tossing gear in the bed.

No Allison trans Excursions. You can get a 6 sped allison installed for 10K.... lol. Plenty of good options for the 4R100 to become a good to excellent transmission. 4-8K is the cost.

When you buy an old truck, you/we must plan on upgrades, unless you find a unicorn. Very few exist anymore. It' not worth the wait. Buy something with good bones and go through it.
20K is the magic number for a older truck + upgrades.

Older 2500/3500 pickup with the 8.1 and Allison tranny. You can pull a house with that combo. You can also watch the gas gauge literally go down when you step on it. A great combo for short towing trips without the aggravation of a diesel just sitting.

The gas gauge comment makes me laugh, used to drive a late 60's Eldorado with a big block that did the same. Anyway to filter these searches to 2500/3500 with the 8.1 and Allison? Certain years to look for or to avoid? I understand LT trim should have leather. While searching I'm noticing a lot of sellers don't list the engine, whether 8.1 or 6.0 in the 2500/3500.

6.0 is easier and cheaper to work on than a 8.1, plus parts are available pretty much anywhere. For a simple 10 mile tow I would go that route

Limited to 2001 - 2006. While it's a good motor, I would personally look for something newer. Interiors on the 2007 & up body styles are a pretty big step up. The 6.0 GM & 6.2 Ford are no slouch, particularly if you aren't logging interstate miles.

6.0 in the 2500 burb is rated less then 10K for towing, so pickup would be the only option.
