Is my Class V hitch bent?

My hitch looks a bit cockeyed. Am I seeing things? Not sure how this couldíve happened unless someone hit it in a parking lot or slowly over time?

Bent for sure, probably too much tongue weight and you not slowing down over RR tracks

m9000 10-12-2019 07:02 AM

It looks bent to me also. How much weight where you towing and what was the tongue weight?

I don't believe you have a class V hitch. Class V hitches are rated for 12,000 pounds and 1700 pounds of tongue weight.

Greg Manning 10-12-2019 07:04 AM

Thats a class III hitch. Either way it's shot.

Technically, that's a "drawbar" or "ball mount" and yes, it is bent. The hitch is what is on your truck.

mouse4x4 10-12-2019 07:53 AM

That's the quality you get when these ball mounts are made from recycled old rusty Toyotas anymore. I had one bent way worse then that.

Belzelbub 10-12-2019 08:02 AM

Doesn’t look like you got hit. If you did, I would expect it to be bent the other way. Looks to me like the load is too much for the drawbar, and probably the ball as well. What are you towing with that?

They do sell components rated for a lot more than 6000 lbs. They may be tough to find in most local stores, though. For instance, the drawbar I’m using is rated for 16,000 lbs / 2400 lb tongue, ball is rated for 14,000 lbs, coupler on the trailer splits the difference at 15,000 lbs. Probably overkill for a towed weight of 8500-9500 lbs max, but I really don’t want the trailer to get separated from the truck.

Replace the drawbar and ball for one rated higher. Ball may be OK, but it looks like a small shank. Hole on the HD drawbar is usually made for a 1 1/4” shank.

So... is the general consensus that this one is done? The metal is fatigued and time for new?

richeerich 10-12-2019 03:37 PM

Yep

If it were mine, I'd replace it before towing again.

Are you overloading the 6,000/600 lb rating?

Reel 007 10-12-2019 03:42 PM

As others have said, that is not a class V hitch, class V requires a 2 1/2 draw bar, anyhow whatever it is it looks shot, the draw bar that is.

captain28570 10-12-2019 04:11 PM

wonder why it says V5 on it?

billinstuart 10-12-2019 05:18 PM

600# tongue weight is all it is rated

IMPLiberty 10-13-2019 07:22 AM

I recently did the same thing with my 7000 lb ball mount.

https://www.thehulltruth.com/trucks-...all-mount.html

Mine happened when trying to pull out a bush at my neighbors house. We ended up having to dig it out, but tried pulling it before we did any digging. The results were a bent ball mount. Any time I get lucky bending or breaking something and no one gets hurt, itís time to upgrade to overkill!

V-5 is the test protocol. Has nothing to do with capacity.

GradyGravelyFord 10-13-2019 07:53 PM

So what are you towing?

ChrisW21 10-13-2019 08:03 PM

"Is my Class V hitch bent?"

No, but your Class III is fubar.

duke460 10-13-2019 08:27 PM
