Default Dodge Durango towing

Anyone using the Dodge Durango with 5.7 as a tow vehicle / family vehicle? How reliable is the 5.7 with 8 speed trans? My wife currently has a 17 Pilot which isn’t a good tow vehicle for my Sea Pro SV 1900. I’ve been thinking Expedition but may consider Dodge. What are the THT thoughts?

My friend had a 2012 Durango 5.7 AWD with tow package and regularly towed a 25ft travel trailer to PA from NC. He said it handled it great and that was with the 6 speed. The 8 speed should do even better. He bought a bigger camper that weighes around 7,000lbs so he stepped up to a ram 1500.

Dodge has stepped up their game. Couple of guys at work have them and they like them. No real issues other than minor stuff her out there, common stuff in all vehicles today. Is your Pilot 2wd or AWD? If AWD I wouldn’t see a problem since it can tow 5k, 2wd 3500. The Durango with the Hemi is way higher though at around 7800.

it is 2WD. I like the vehicle but not much for towing.

Do you have eyes on a Durango w Hemi? I have a ‘14 w AWD and the V6. Its not a Hemi and isn’t going to win drag races but it’s got plenty of giddy up and is good on gas for what it does. I tow a 22’ whaler that is probably 5500 pounds all up with the trailer, fuel, etc. You’d be fine with the V6 for your boat. Honestly, the Hemi might be overkill though if you want the HP and torque, go for it.
As for comfort, etc, this is a great vehicle! I’ve done a ski vacation road trip with 6 guys and it was awesome. Plenty of room, solid tunes, nice picture on the DVD screens and comfortable seats.

We have had it since new in December 2013, and have Had minimal issues. OEM tires suck, swapped out for Michelins and it runs nice and smooth with them!

any questions, let me know.

A Durango with a 5.7 Hemi and the 8 speed auto will be an excellent tow vehicle for a boat that size. The only thing I'd add is air bags in the rear coils. My old '07 Jeep with the Hemi and the Chrysler 5 speed pulls our 20' like its not there. The newer Hemis have more power and torque and the 8 spd shifts lightening fast and is always in the right gear.

Plenty power power with the Durango. 8 speed is nice.
