My 2018 GMC also has weather radar through SiriusXM, but its not near as accurate as an app like Radar Now is.

Schmaltz, I have upgraded to a durable flip phone. EVERY Smart phone on my construction sites has either a busted screen or a dead battery.

AOL dial-up..what was it..$200 to upgrade to 50,000 baud? Slower than the speed of smell. I remember that sound...

You use the maps and signs, I'll use Waze (or other crowd sourced system) that lets me know the x-way is dead stopped a few miles ahead from an accident and save me a couple of hours sitting in packed traffic.

This exact thing happened to me a few years ago. We were travelling 20 hours with another family, they stayed on the xway oblivious to the problems ahead, I got off and bypassed the mess. They sat for a couple hours at 2am... I kept moving and got there way ahead of them.

amen. Nothing is worse than sitting still on the interstate. When traveling to the beach I intentionally take secondary roads. Guaranteed 30-45 min longer. But no more than 1 hour longer. Interstate could be 3 extra hours if there is a bad wreck.

A traffic jam is nothing more than a pause for rolling a spliff in my world.

No worries.

your tax dollars pay for traffic sensors too. can only imagine how much time I've saved using my phone to navigate. I don't mind driving (too much) but admit that I seriously dislike sitting in traffic. if you like sitting in traffic I would say you're kinda like a decent looking college kid who likes fat ugly chicks--lucky and the world is your oyster! enjoy it!

I think the apps the majority of people use work. Like Waze, Spotify and the like. I personally have no need to watch weather radar while I’m driving. Personally I think Carplay is worth it just for Waze.

The Dodge Uconnect system works great in my Challenger. It has ACP and so does Acura. I use ACP occasionally with Waze, Maps and Google Maps. But I much prefer the built in navigation system. The Uconnect shows traffic, weather and radar. Of course all through SiriusXM.

What is Waze? I have the Uconnect and travelink in my Ram. I can get nav through my phone (android auto) or in the built in nav which has live traffic. What is Waze / ACP?

ACP = Apple Car Play. It is the iPhoney version of Android Auto, phone apps "display" on the car's screen.

I don't know about Travellink but if it is using live traffic to do live routing then it is probably close to what Waze and Google Maps will do. Not sure where it gets it's data from.

Waze is about a decade old, really the first to do good live routing using data from other Waze users to estimate traffic slowdowns, etc. It also has a way to let users map police and also traffic cams (as well as hazards, etc), so you may get an indication of a speed trap. It's not perfect, but on a road with moderate traffic the police are usually marked. A few years ago Google bought Waze, probably for their data and started to also mark speed traps on google maps. With waze you can mark dead animals, debris in road, potholes, etc if you want...

Thank you for that. I had never heard of Waze before. Much appreciated.

Only reason I would use carplay is for Waze. Before you pay for an update make sure it's includes the most recent changes in your area. Easiest way is to find someone with a new vehicle like yours and see if their nav has the changes yours does not.

In general I wouldn't pay for any nav on my vehicle. Heck, my new 2019 GM doesn't even have the speed limits correct and they changed two years ago...

I'm not sure which component is the problem, but Waze on my Samsung Galaxy S8+ through Android Auto in my 2018 Audi was completely useless. It would update the vehicle position about every 2-3 minutes. However Google Maps through Android Auto in my Audi rocks out. As others have said, route planning/updates based on live traffic is great.

I use waze w/iphone x and carplay. seamless. the speed trap info is priceless. the route planning/traffic appears to be nearly identical to google maps, which probably shouldn't be surprising. of course I really don't mind speeding tickets because waiting for the cop to write a ticket just gives me some time to do some lines and pound a 6 pack.

For the Apple Car Play fans..don't buy a BMW: They charge for Carplay now.

That is amazing to me. What does an average BMW cost...$45K? $60K? And they nickel and dime you with a subscription to Apple Car Play? If they have to charge for it...Just put it in the price of the car...no one would ever know.

They say its to future proof for bugs. I say "BS".

This is only the beginning. We are entering the age of the software-defined car where everything will be an upcharge to unlock features. I'm waiting for the day when manufacturers like BMW have only one engine they make and there is a fee to unlock additional HP. Think about it. Something like the Ford 3.5 EB could power anything in BMWs lineup. Wold, it not be cheaper to make one engine and nuder it unless a customer wants the additional HP?

Kinda like some current outboards? They do that with upgraded features in cars already.
