Default Critical of Censorship?

I posted a thread in the Captains Club Forum at THT, thatwas somewhat borderline critical of closing the Bilge due to the new PC censorship that now prevails at IB. Here is the thread title and a link.“Welcome to the new Bilge, I guess” http://www.thehulltruth.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=181431#M1899521I received an automatic thread update notice – This was the first update notice I received. There are three posts to the thread and it seems a member named DCroller made a post to the thread as follows – “JUst move over to Titlefish”. That post is no longer there – obviously having been removed by the Powers.

I consider myself somewhat moderate and believe free speech (within reason) is good thing in any public arena. Anyone should be able to tell me where to go (there’s never been a shortage there) and given that many posters provide links to other sites (this instance there was no LINK) on THT, I personally resent the implication I do not have the ‘good judgment’ to decide for myself what PUBLIC web sites suit my needs.

I’ve been relatively tolerant of THT’s and IB’s right to control their Forums and have even offered suggestions how to control the bickering and acrimony that was beginning to prevail on the web site, but I am intolerant, to the extreme, of ANYONE deciding for me where I cannot go in a public arena.I don’t intend to quit the site as there is a great deal of boating and fishing information useful to me, but, now, instead of visiting the site regularly to see if I can offer help to other members with their boating, fishing and electronic equipment problems, I will probably only visit to seek information and possible solutions to problems of that nature that arise for me, personally.Fishing/boatmen are a peculiar and particular lot. As a rule, they drink, swear, particularly enjoy scantily clad women, and take considerable pride in their boats and equipment. Every fishing/boatman is cantankerous, opinionated, contentious, and egotistical about every subject of concern to him. These attributes are the defining qualities that engulf and direct ‘dockside banter’. IB has chosen to ‘cut off’ these ‘personality’ traits instead directing and channeling them into an area where they can be ‘controlled’ with some judicious ‘adjusting’ of temperaments.I intend to post these remarks on THT, in Dockside Chat, and see how long the thread lasts since I doubt it will adhere to IB’s ‘guidelines’. I’m also sending this to IB direct, but do not expect a reaction from that quarter. Looks to me as if IB has gone extreme Leftist with their PC and media control – an attitude that will cost them a great deal of $$$ in the long run. Just my never to be humble opinion, but I think IB has “missed the boat” with their International Brand of PC.

Well said...I astonished at the fact that just about every forum has a thread critical of IB and their tactics. Kinda reminds me of the A1 thread, are we witness to the self destruction of THT? What a waste.

I'm with you NJM. I too PM'd the Mod and pretty much said what you said. I was assured that things would get better. It has gotten worse and no opinions can be voiced without fear of retribution. I will never understand how people/ companies buy perfectly functioning businesses and have to change everything and run them into the ground. Fisherman will never be PC and any attempt to force PC on them/ us will fail as will the forum that they support.

No REAL boaters or fishermen in control. They gave some azzhat ZAP power and whoever he/she is thinks they are the combined Superheros of the League of Justice fighting for Truth, Justice and the Fascist way. BAM! SMA$%&K, BOOM, etc.

You know it is bad when I am reminiscing about the days when DD/gradyrot/his many other names would post some incomprehensible but occasionally funny gibberish.

I have been on here many years. Although I don't post much, I lurk daily. The appeal of this site has always been its honesty. What a shame if people get banned for speaking their mind. Is the intent to turn this site into a sterile Q&A site where any non-politically correct statements or anything that is critical of a sponsor is deleted. IB, this is not a course of action that will grow the site or maintain peoples' interest. You are ruining a good thing. The appeal of this site was that it was like a bunch of fishing buddies hanging around the dock bullsh*ting with each other. Now people are afraid to honesty post because they don't want to be banned. What is really ironic is the moderator complicity with IB. I think I know who moderators 1 & 2 are. One, from north of the border, used to be the nicest guy here and would go out his way to welcome and help people and respected others opinions even if he didn't agree. The other, from south of the border, was very knowledge but also very opinionated and loved to get into it with people. The first one seems to be compromised by IB, the second one would probably have had posts deleted by IB. It's a shame. Really. For now I'm not going anywhere because I've been here so long, but I really hope it gets better.

Gus and Jeff (or Wiley) are not the Mods. Not going to disclose who they are or play the guessing game either.

Whatever. The real issue here isn't the mods, its the censorship.

There is no PC Censorship. But racial and ethnic slurs are not encouraged neither is personal harassment of THT members, and that includes the admin and moderators. If you have a complaint about the management, PM it but refrain from starting mutinous threads stating your discontent. If the complaint is in a civil manner rather than in a form that's akin to "Welcome to the New Bilge", it will be taken under consideration.
Also the Bilge is not an area where anything goes. It has its own rules which all members who post in there should be aware of. It is not Internet Brands' fault if a member fails to read the Bilge guidelines or even the THT Terms of Usage. We will reprimand members for violating the THT Terms of Usage. A member's failure to heed the warnings will only result in them being relieved of THT's membership.

Thank you.

I misspoke, or mistyped. I agree that racial and ethnic slurs should not be tolerated and neither should harassment of others. But remember that an open and free exchange of ideas was the founding principle of THT and what made this place great. I hope that we can get back on track and that those who left come back and that those who were banned will be allowed to come back.

I consider any censorship at all as immediately construed as the 'powers' wanting PC. I have never made an ethnic or racial slur and defy anyone to quote one from any post of mine or find anyone who ever complained about being 'harassed' by me. It would appear that any criticism of administration or moderators is considered a mutinous thread and stating my discontent in a civil manner puts me in a position of being relieved of my THT membership. I have read the Bilge guidelines and even the THT Terms of Usage, but, as a a casual observer, note that they are being selectively enforced.

I did make my complaint, in a civil manner, as appears in the original post starting this thread. I did inform IB administration direct of my discontent and and have ignored, just as any suggestions made to help alleviate IB's 'problem' with specific members have been ignored, obviously not worthy of consideration. I stand by my comment:

"I’ve been relatively tolerant of THT’s and IB’s right to control their Forums and have even offered suggestions how to control the bickering and acrimony that was beginning to prevail on the web site, but I am intolerant, to the extreme, of ANYONE deciding for me where I cannot go in a public arena."

and I resent, to the utmost, the censorship of comments made by ANY member in response to any post of mine. I believe I am mature enough, and thick-skinned enough to decide for myself, if any comment made is worthy of using the !Alert button. I accept the latest posting by FH in this thread to be my 'warning' and reprimand. If this response is considered a 'violation of the THT Terms of Usage' and results in my being subsequently 'relieved' of THT membership, so be it. I won't even ask for my $29.95 back, It's worth the $30 bucks to find out who I might be better off not hanging around with.
