Default Rebuilding Actuators.

Dear Tabman,

Ok, starboard tab does not go up or down. Motor makes noise in reverse, but not much going forward, it runs for a second then stops as if it has reached the bottom, but it has not moved. Port tab works as it should.

I reversed the hydraulic lines at the pump and the same problem with starboard tab. I then disconnected hydraulic line where it is connected to brass tube in transom, click on pump and viola, lots of fluid all over my bilge.

So, I have narrowed it down to the starboard actuator. Then suddenly, a memory. About two years ago when we started this total restoration we changed the top hinge piece on these from external to internal. Only when doing so, some idiot (me) did not bother to read the instructions before unscrewing the top hinge piece on this one and the thing "popped" open. I thought I had put it back together correctly, but now I am not so sure.

So, what do you suggest? I am guessing I lost an O ring or something? I searched this thread on how to rebuild an actuator, but found nothing, which I was surprised!

Please tell me what to do next !

Here is a distant pic of the tab in question. Click here!

Doubt you damaged anything when the actuator piston "snapped up" on you, but you might have screwed the brass pipe nipple in too deep which could cause the issue you are having with the unit. Replacement of the actuator's Upper Hinge would most likely be your best choice in this case, so please contact us at the email address below and we will see what we can to help you get back on the water!

We look forward to your email.
