I was born in UNC Memorial Hospital and lived the fist 20 years of my life in walking distance to Carmichael Auditorium/Campus. I remember Roy from when he was Dean's assistant to the assistant coach. My parents actually used to buy UNC calendars from him when he sold them door to door to supplement the tiny amount assistant coaches made at the time. There is no one with deeper UNC roots. As a friend of mine put it...Dean Smith let Bill Guthridge and Matt Doherty into the gym, he gave Roy the keys.

Thanks Roy

One of my best sports memories was being in the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis and watch Roy gain his first national championship as Head Coach at UNC.

He left a real legacy with the African American Studies Program. No one was better at cheating than Roy. The godfather of the "Carolina Way".

NCAA is so angered at UNC academic cheating that they will put ECU on probation. Watch out.

Haha exactly. It still amazes me that they got out of that whole deal with just a slap on the wrist. Corruption at its finest. At least UNCheat fans can no longer look down their noses at everyone else. They will never live that down.

The "Carolina Way" cracks me up everytime I hear it - people in Chapel Hill believe it when they first get on campus -

He's definitely a HOF Coach, gonna be hard to replace him - esp Like the time he drank a coke in the stands of the ACC Tourney while Pepsi was the sponsor...

This is what I love about them being caught as possibly the biggest cheaters in ncaa history. They can't say anything, just call you a hater. It's great lol.

You mean the program that was started by the Academic Dept to help black students get better grades? All athletes (not just bball players) were pushed to take those "classes" because they were easy A's. The women's soccer team took it. It was affirmative action.

The man looked ill at his announcement. I wonder how soon he’ll be gone.

not quite. Regardless of their origins, these were no show classes and/or classes for 1 person with virtually automatic A. Don't try to justify this garbage. Don't be a normal tarheel with holier than attitude.

Not trying to justify anything. All I'm saying is those "classes" weren't invented by Roy or the basketball team or the Athletic Dept. That's why there were no penalties. The NCAA couldn't punish any teams because it was created by the Academic Dept to help minorities get better grades. Athletes from all sports participated, black and white. Singling out Roy is BS.

those classes were used and abused by UNC athletics. Including basketball players. The term is academic fraud. The intent of those classes is irrelevant.
I am singling out UNC as a whole and the coaches / teams that committed academic fraud (including Roy).
The worst part? The arrogance of UNC administration and fans.

Ask yourself this. If UNC Wilmington sent students to no show classes and committed en masse academic fraud all the while claiming the intentions were pure to help minorities, what would have happened?
You know the answer.

Other posters were singling out Roy. The school was guilty. No doubt about that. I don't think the NCAA had many options. They couldn't just punish the bball and fball teams when athletes from all sports benefited. After years of investigating they weren't going to give every sport the death penalty. Would they have at UNCW? I have no idea.

I don't even like Roy. Thought he was a terrible in game coach. He was a decent recruiter but when it came to making adjustments during the game and motivating players he was the worst. It took Matt Doherty's players to finally win him a NC after always losing the big one at Kansas.
