Default State dept warning on going to Bahamas?

Saw the headlines on the news that the state dept is warning Americans to be very careful in certain areas of the Bahamas due to all kinds of crimes. Have been there a few times and never felt any different than anywhere else. Anyone have any direct knowledge in what’s happening over there. We are planning to go to treasure this summer.

Go to Treasure and have fun. The problems are in Nassau and Freeport. Mostly gang and drug related crimes. Lots of young Bahamian thinking they want to gangstas emulating the American hip hop culture.

The Family Islands are safer than most US cities.

https://travel.state.gov/content/tra...-advisory.html

I’ve never been there but I’ve traveled to about 50 2nd and 3rd world countries and it’s all pretty much the same. Know where the sketchy areas are, realize how comparatively rich you are/appear to be compared to the locals, take official taxis, know the scams, and use common sense. Strip down your wallet and carrying a “throw away” wallet wirh 20 bucks and a cancelled credit card in case you do get pick pocketed or robbed. Do that and you will be able to safely travel damn near anywhere that isn’t an active war zone. DOS warnings on crime are worthless, but when they talk about terrorist or political instability it’s time to take notice.

Evidently we need a wall between us and the Bahamas.

Thanks for posting the link. I had never heard of the STEP program before, I will enroll in it next time I am overseas. Currently I am in Indonesia and am more concerned about tsunamis etc than street crime. However, I did watch "Captain Phillips" on the flight over, and stayed at a Holiday Inn Express just before boarding my flight, so I feel well prepared.
