Default 2 Speed 50w Reel

I'm looking at getting a couple of 50w reels. I've looked at the TLD 50, Tyrnos 50 and the Tiagra 50 and I'm leaning towards the Tyrnos, kind of middle ground. I'd like to hear some opinions and other recommendations if anyone has them. Thanks

How do you plan to use them? I have Avets, Okumas, and Accurates that I use for trolling and larger BFT / YFT on the west coast. Opinions vary but I've good success with the Avet EXW50/2 and the Makaira SE reels.

Iíve had all three. Had great luck with all three. To me Iíd only Shimano for a very long time but recently been turned on to the *new* Okuma gear. I think you should get Tiagras - I kind of went up the scale until I got the Tiagras then moved to Talica line

Currently Iím fishing Okuma Makairas and they are best Iíve fished.

I use Avet in smaller reels not a ton of experience with 30w plus

Have fished Penn, Tiagra and Okuma Makaira. Okuma is my choice.

I have a tyrnos 30. Pretty decent reel with a high gear ratio, never let me down, not sure if the 50w the same high gear ratio.

I also have tlds not as good as the tyrynos but still ok.

My favorite reels though definitely my Okuma Makaira's. Have used Tiagras but prefer Okuma's

All good reels though.

I'd like to do some HST. I won't do a lot of it but definitely want to give it a try. Also I've been fishing a boat where I can only run 5 lines and will be getting a new boat with outriggers so I will be able to run 6 lines when fishing for mahi, sails, etc. so I'll use one of these as my 6th line. At least that is the plan

Any of the reels above would work for this - just follow the recommendations of our THT elders on spooling it up. As a suggestion, you may want to find a friend or two with a reel you want to try and invite them to go fish or borrow theirs for the day. That way you can try it out before you buy it. When you get into the bigger reels the price goes up quite a bit and once you buy it and use it you're stuck with it. Reels to me are like shoes for my wife - I have way more than I need and anytime a new one comes out I will eventually buy it and try it out. Most of my trolling is 7-10 knots which isn't considered high-speed. There are a number of threads on here from THT-ers that regularly do HST and they have some great recommendations for line and lures. Good luck and post pictures of the next big one you catch.

Another vote for the Makaira's. We fish the 16 SEA and the 30 SEA and they are beasts.

50’s are the new 50 Wides. Don’t overlook the standard width.

Gary-If you want to keep on a budget, for the fishing you are doing, the Penn Squall 50 VSW, Shimno TLD or Tyrnos will all be more than enough. They can all handle HST trolling in SE Florida with ease. You can get a great deal on the Squall online. If you plan on going to the Bahamas with the new boat, then look at the Okuma Makairas.

I was planning to put the new 50s on a bent butt rod, is that required? As I said I'll use them mostly for trolling 7 - 8 mph. I plan to try some HST but probably in the 12 knot range.

I have one of my TLD 50 LRSAs on a bent butt and the rest on straight butt rods. Great for trolling. I have not however use them for HST. I am sure the reels would be ok but my straight butt rods may not like it.
