Default Penn Squall 16 VS two speed

Good afternoon,

i am looking for some feed back on th Penn Squall 16 VS two speed reel. I would be using it for bass and blues. I would be running wire line or lead core line off them. At this time I am using Penn Squall 50’s However was looking to get back into two speed reels. I used to have Penn 10 KG two speed reels and loved them. Any thoughts on the reel....pros and cons would be awesome!!
Thank you,
Mark

Thats a pretty heavy reel for bass and blues. The VS 2 speeds are much larger than the Squall lever drags. They are essentially Internationals with graphite bodies. I use mine for offshore trolling dolphin, wahoo, tuna, etc...

If you want a smaller 2 speed lever drag Penn, check out the Fathom line.

The fathoms? Yeah, they aren't very pretty, but they are good strong reels with a full aluminum body. I have a couple that I use for jigging. A lot of guys like the Avet reels for stripers, but I don't have any first hand experience with them.

There's no reason you couldn't use the 16vs, but get your hands on one first. You'll see what I mean about being big and heavy for what you're looking to do. I love my 2 speed Squalls, but I'm fishing for bigger game with them.

As said above that is a pretty big reel for blues and bass. Guys around here are using them for chunking and trolling tuna. They whip 50lb and larger tuna like no ones business. Would they work for trolling bass and blues? Probably, but way overkill IMO. I'd get a TLD 15 before the squall for bass duty.

Well I got my hands on the 16VS and it is big. At the same time I got my hands on the Penn International 16 two so eed. That is a little smaller and felt better. I know both are very similar. Anyone have the 16 two speed international and thoughts on that one.

Go with the the Penn Fathom 40LD2 instead. Much smaller and lighter but can handle everything from striped bass to Tuna. Great all around performance. Moreover, you can find them on sale for around 200.00.
