Ironically enough, Amazon 2 years ago had a ridiculous blowout deal on Aftco's. I can't remember which model I scooped up but it was $49.95 prime shipped.

The Aftco taper tip gaffs would be my pick.

Get a six foot Marsh Tacky Carbon fiber. They’re going to be close to the same weight as the four footer that you’re used to. They are deadly and very easy and quick to swing with one hand. They also have a gimbal so it will lock into the rod holder with the hook pointed in the direction that you need it to be when you pull it out. Doesn’t seem like a huge deal until you’ve commercial fished and gaffed fish with one hand while having a rod or leader in the other. Every little bit helps.

they look sweet. Australian made. Don't seem too common in the US though. Amazon had them but are out of stock. Still a bit more than I would like to spend, but pretty cool looking.

Order some stainless rod stock in the diameter that meets your strength requirement. Bend into a hook with with the desired gap. Lash and epoxy to a piece of Calcutta bamboo. I haven't had a failure yet.

wow, yes that is bent. No way a 40 lb dolphin does that though.
How did that happen?

that’s what happens when the mate misses with dart on 700lbs gbft. I yelled at him to get the harpoon line off the mainline with the gaff. What he said he heard was stick the effer with the gaff. Couldn’t believe he held on.

check out their website often. They build a nice product. Would definitely be a customer if I was local. Edit I do have two Conley rods on board for black fishing. Lol autocorrect puts my last name in.

As far as floatation goes I recall being in a conversation earlier this year when we discussed spraying insulation/gad filler foam into the open end of the gaff to possibly make the gaff buoyant. I never followed up with the guys to see if it worked for them or not but it's something you may want to look into.

that happens by trying to lever a fish over the gunnels. Or I guess it could happen if the fish runs under the boat. gaffs aren't made for that.

lol!
So you’re looking specifically for a gaff with a 4” Winthrop hook that’s made in Barbados?

If you can ship in a gaff you can ship in a hook and a blank. A 4’ E-glass with a 4” Winthrop hook can be had for <$100 US even with dropping $10 on an aluminum gimbal butt.

For solo work the gimbal butt is everything. Have your gaff set up ready to grab with one hand and it’s in the exact same place every time.

used aftco for years - only bends are from operator error, not fish-also Conley makes a great product

I went ahead and ordered a couple of Connley gaffs, and I also was able to get a friend to bring in a couple of 4" Winthrop hooks. Not sure what I will use for the handle - aluminum tube is available locally. Not cost effective to ship in carbon fiber poles separately (unless I had thought about it and seen if Mike could have included a couple with the gaffs I bought from him)
