Default Penn Fathom FTH40NLD

Looking to upgraded my bottom fishing rods, mainly grouper and snapper fish in the big bend area in North Florida. I am looking at the getting the Penn Fathom 40 (the one with the red trim) what are everyone’s thoughts on this reel?

I use mine for everything from live eels for stripers to tossing baits to circling sharks. I have been very happy with it.

Tight reel, very capable for the $$ Tall enough so it turns some line, narrow enough so your not going nuts laying line with your thumb... Excellent freespool for a lever drag reel

Get the 2 speed if you're primarily using it for bottom fishing....

I've got a 15, and a couple of 30s.

Solid reels for the money.

The 2 speed would better suit you. Especially if you get a hold of a XL donkey

I've got a few 40 NLD HS (high speed) that I use for kites. Love them!

I have a few of the 40 HS for kites/troll and one on a bottom rod. I also have a 2-sp in the 40 narrow size.

Great reels for the price. Love them.

I have several Fathoms ranging from the 40NLD2 down to the star drag 12 going back a few years now. All have been rode hard with just a rinse back at the dock. Without any mechanical failures to date.

Both my Fathom 30NLD2 and my Squall 40 have help up great through 3 seasons so far. Just like Squid Chum said. I give mine a light misting and a wipe down, also use reel wash and it seem to work great, especially for reels you don't want to put a lot of water pressure on. I use the Fathom 2 speed primarily for bottom fishing and the squall for trolling. The two speed option is great for big stubborn Fish.

Get the 30 2 speed paired with Shimano trevala 6’ 6” , load with it 100lb braid tighten the drag and break necks . This set up is perfect for bottom fishing . I have 2 buddies that commercial fish with this reel and consistently bring in 40-50lb gags with it . I love mine , don’t leave the dock without, they are tough reels , one of my commercial buddies doesn’t even wash it , just throws it in corner and it keeps truckin. It’s a bada** little reel .

No better reel for the money, I have several lever drags 25N single speed, 25N 2 speed and 40N 2 speed....none of them has disappointed me.

Great all around reel.

Charkbait.com is also running a special on Metaloid reels. I have been using a couple of the size fives for years and have a twelve I haven't fished yet. Great reels, especially for the money.

I bought my first Penn last week Fathom 25N single speed. I will not be buying another. It feels like and sounds like I need to strip it down and grease everything. But I guess it is not fair to compare a $180 reel to a Torsa and Talica, but still it should not be as big a difference. My 10 year old Speedmasters feel better.
