One thing about the avets (bigger ones at least) is after a few years the rubber on the handles deteriorates and gets sticky, kinda sucks. My fin-nor is older and the handle is still going strong on it.

Mostly caused by sunscreen lotion , I switch mine out to anodized T-bars

Default Spooling

because 130 is cheaper per yard than 100 lb and you can still get 700 yards on that spool between backing and top shot - enough to stop almost anything

Chris (pelagic) is awesome - hit him up and he’ll educate you. I bother him too much

I don't use sunscreen so that's not my issue.

Thanks for the info. Whats the typical top shot people are running on these? 100 yards of 80lb?

Again, depends on preference. I thnk the standard is 500-600 braid and 150 mono.

our 50s have 100 lb top shot. 30s have 80lb

I have tiagras as well, thinking the 50visx would be a great light weight replacement. I really only use my 50's for HST for wahoo and pulling marlin plugs or baits on planers. Can run into big blue marlin off charleston pretty often in the spring and summer.

Again, I’d call Chris and talk it over. With new specs out there could probably downsize to 30 wides...plenty of line capacity, drag, etc and less weight.

or get talicas

Ill give Chris a call for sure. I have plenty of talica 25's......high speed trolling with them has crossed my mind.......

Spooled by Basil. 100 # JBHC would have bumped it up to 600 yards of braid, but I like the 80#. A thinner mono than Momoi Diamond would also give more, but again... The mono takes up a lot of space, but this reel is for trolling so needed.

FWIW - i am a rinse and put away guy too. I run an all avet spread - (2) 50exw, (2) 30exw, and (5) hxw ..................they see use 12 - 15 times per year in the northeast. I am on finishing up my 3rd season with them and neither of them have ever been opened. They are all braid backed and i change the topshots when they need it. I rinse them (no soap) - wipe them dry with a chamois - store them with the drags off

Anything i've said might not be applicable in a charter application, or for someone who can get offshore 100 days a year.....................but in your average rec environment, the avet's are very hard to beat IMO.

Good to know. I'm sure they are top notch. I don't have any first hand experience using them, just hear say.

I run two Avet ex50’s about 30 trips a year for about four years now. Spooled with about 800 yards of 80# hollow core braid and 100 yards of 80# mono top shot. Almost all trips start and end with HST and no problems to report with the reels so far.

I run the 80/80 combo because it’s a good match for the rods they’re on and I have no desire to switch them to broomsticks. Smaller topshot stays out the water longer and doesn’t get blown out in the wind as much.

My go to 50lb outfit is an Avet 30 narrow filled with 80 hollow core braid with a 50yard 50lb mono top shot.

Plenty of line and drag to kill anything I personally want to be fighting.
