Read to whole thread and got the same bait and switch capt deal. Booked a 10 day long range out of San Diego with my son on the boat that 2 weeks prior had landed the world record YFT. Got to the boat loaded and headed south and did not realize we did not have the GUY running the boat. You can goggle the boat if you like and captain. Long story short, in 10 days ONE yes ONE YFT over 200# was caught. All the other 15-20 yft were football size. All the other boats that went to Farallon Islands crushed them! Once back I took it up with the front office and was offered a 10% discount on my next trip, thanks but no thanks.

With all the bad press B D is getting on here and elsewhere at the least he should offer another FREE trip and you cover fuel. That is if you would ever want to fish with him after this CF.

What a cluster! IMO the captain should offer you a free trip to a make up for this. Way out of line and totally bizarre to send a group of guys out to fish far offshore with a couple of children supposedly running the show.

I googled Super Grouper, and the first thing that showed up was that they were arrested for lobster poaching. Are all of these charter guys down there poachers?

The owner said he'd put his son up against any charter captain in the keys and he'd win when we said the same thing.

He paid the price and is back to fishing. There is a lot that goes on down there! Some others mentioned in this thread have also been AWAY.

Aaron Wright has my old T and it still a fish slayer. You can look on his FB page.

It appears that he paid a HUGE price, lost his boat. I wasn't saying that I wouldn't charter him because of it, I was just saying that it seems like a lot of the charter guys down there that I google have had run ins with the law over poaching. None of my business as long as when I'm with any of them they are 100% legal.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the personal integrity expected of the fishing charter captains available in KW.

I'd be pissed as fuck. One of those situations where you think to yourself, "should I cancel and go home or do I go on the trip since this has been booked and dont want to ruin vacation" It's a lose-lose IMO. Sucks.

Don't know much about Delph other than his reputation of putting fish in the boat......but I've done a Tortugas charter with another well known captain who couldnt put us on fish to save his life, so it's all relative.

/ I also had a bait & switch pulled on me on another Tortugas trip...dont think we ever even made it out of the Marquesas. We clearly agreed to do a "Tortugas trip" and even specified fishing deeper as we had all fished the Tortugas many times and wanted to target larger fish.

That's exactly what happened, we decided to go.

These people suck that do this. The industry gets a black eye and it is a fairly unregulated business for the most part to the novice that doesn't research their pick beyond yelp and so on.

It is bad for business for us that provide professional service. I compete with these jack legs every day. I loose business every day to these types.

Now, I'm gonna put this shit on the OP. Every aspect of this trip was wrong from start to finish on the charter side. Had the OP caught a huge amount of fish on his trip my bet is this thread would not exist nor would we have ever heard a word about this BS of a 16 year old kid running the boat and so on.

Also OP, you had a knowledgeable group on board as you say with a licensed Captain as well. He should have detected the smell of BS real quick.

I understand the want to complete your planed trip. That desire made you overlook all the warning signals. Kinda of like getting on a twin engine aircraft with the starboard prop missing before take off. SURE IT CAN FLY!

Sooner or later every business is going to have a pissed off customer. That being said I had nearly the same problem with a captain from another marina in Key West a few years back. Stayed in islamorada cuz we were falling asleep at 11pm on the way down up at 430 to get down to key west to fish at 7am. I booked with a captain and was switched to another one on the way down. I understand things come up and he did get us on another boat. The next morning at 720 after sitting in the parking lot for 45 minutes the 2nd captain called me and asked if we could reschedule for the next day. I simply said no we were up at 430 and drove down from islamorada to fish and that's what we were gonna do. He told me the soonest he could get there was 810 or so. .... at 830 he showed up got the forklift driver to put his boat in the water then we had to wait to get gas....... I could not tell you how pissed I was but off we went I asked about getting bait he said it was too late and he only need the 1 frozen Bonita to catch fish also he looked at my jig bag and said you guys have jigs no need for bait.....

Long story short. It was one of the best days on the water I have ever had. Captain 1 Rush Malts had a family emergency and set us up with Captain 2 Alex Canalejo on Showtime. I actually asked him to drive 3 miles away and back because i couldnt take the temp 97degrees 0 wind. We caught fish non stop and some cool ones too my first Warsaw, and Wahoo. Warsaw was on a jig. Wahoo was hand fed boatside such a cool bite.

I fully understand the OP and not wanting to cancel. I don't think local people look at what a customer who is a serious fisherman goes through to charter a trip. Not everyone is on vacation for 2 weeks with 1 day planned in the middle to fish. I do not know the captain he is talking about but he has a good reputation. I am in no way saying what happened to the OP is ok. Just sharing a similar experience with a different outcome.

It wasn't the kids fault that he was in that situation. He still tried to put us on fish.

You still would have heard about it, but I would have said that we caught a lot of fish and the kids seemed fully qualified to run a paid charter. But I would have still asked what every ones opinion on the switch was.

IDK what a "licensed captain" is in reference to this thread.... An OUPV/Master? Or a FL state registered guide... Either way, this is probably borderline illegal as the outfit providing the service was not licensed to do so. That would have been enough for me to tell him to pound sand.

Fair enough. So would you advocate using this guy again?
The kid is not fully qualified and is operating Illegally.

You have now supported an Illegal operation unknown to you at the time.

This was not a switch to a legal operation. I would never pass a trip off to known illegal operators under any circumstance. Much less have my unlicensed kid run my boat with your well being in his hand. The operation was operating outside of the law and common sense the minute you stepped on board.

There is no excuse for what happened on the charter boat side. You appear to at least have some knowledge of how this works. I wonder how many have been dealt the same deal? "Unknowingly"

Makes me sick!

I would absolutely not recommend this charter either way. Catching fish or not.
