Was it worth the price of the charter just to experience the awesomeness of the seakeeper?

and your buddy should’ve told him if my tickets on the charter than I’m the captain and I’m getting paid and running the boat. Kinda telling there’s no one else carrying a card that could stand in.

Always, always always, make sure it's the number 1 captain that is taking you out. I know it was sprung on the OP last minute..on purpose probably...But I always make sure it is the number 1 guy...I am paying to fish wit "that guy"...not to fish on "that guy's boat".

July 2nd. I'm not here to bash, just seeing if I was right in being a bit pissed. The 16 year old is going to make a hell of a captain some day, but in my mind that day wasn't the day that we went.

LOL, the seakeeper seemed to work well, wasn't too rough so we didn't get to enjoy all of its greatness! The Seahunter boat on the other hand rode like crap, bow high and bumpy for the seas. Might have been the "captain", or maybe just a light hull.

I planned my Keys family vacation around that trip, and we already drove down to Key West. If I had known it was a 16 and 12 year old captain and mate, I would have looked around for another charter the night before. According to my buddy, no mention of the kids age in the conversation. I haven't talked directly to the owner, so the info I'm getting is from my buddy and I doubt he would lie about and of the conversations that they had.

no worries. I just wanted to determine how recent this was because if your dates matched the dates that I'm thinking of, he would've had a VERY good reason to not be able to make it on the trip.

Otherwise, sending the kids isn't a good move. I'd have been upset as well.

Many moons ago I ran charters for a short time under another captain on his second boat. His second boat paled in comparison to the main boat, yet he'd often pull the bait and switch. He'd book them, then when they show up to fish with him on his boat they find out that they're actually going with me on a different boat. I wasn't nearly as good nor was the boat nearly as good. I always felt horrible for them and it played a role in me deciding that chartering wasn't my thang. I feel for ya.

He may have had a good reason for it, but I'm sure that he knew about the reason way before 6PM the night before. And it would also have been nice to know the full details on our new captain and mate. Also, if I'm not getting the captain that I agreed on, it should have been discounted. It's like ordering a Ferrari to be built and when you go to pick it up, they try to give you a fiero at the same price. It's still a red "sports" car that drives, what's the big deal?

well, no. If it was the date that I was thinking of, he wouldn't have known before 6pm the night before. Trust me.
On the same token, though, his kids probably wouldn't have been running trips the next day, either, so...but it's a moot point because the dates don't match. In your situation, yes, more than likely he could've given you notice.

This story is the reason I don't do "blind" charters and never will. I'd rather spend the time, effort, money to haul my boat or a buddy's and do "ok" fishing than to feel like I pissed money away.

I've had GREAT captains where it was repeat experience or rock-solid word of mouth; but I won't just go from the pics on a website and a phone call.

He said that he had paperwork to do over his wife's deal. We got the whole story. I feel sorry for the guy and kids for what happened, but all of a sudden you have paperwork to do for something that happened 4 or 5 months ago? I'm just saying that it was very unprofessional and I highly doubt this paperwork popped up Sunday night. If so, I'm sorry for assuming, but I'm not sorry for being annoyed with the whole situation.

I wonder what would have happened if your buddy didn't have a captains license ? Would he have sent you anyway with the kids and no license?

It was word of mouth that made us use him for our charter. Two of the guys that I fished with are highly ingrained in the fishing industry.

ok, so you know. Got it. That's what I was referring to.
It's not unheard of for people to show up online here and tell their story long after it happened. So I was just checking to see if your trip and his issue were the same dates. If so, That's a good excuse. Otherwise, I'm on your side here.

He probably would have showed up so he didn't lose money. Just a guess.

Even if your buddy had his license, did he hold reef and pelagic permits..??

My understanding is that they are assigned to the Capt, and not the boat.

Unless I'm wrong, someone please correct me...

You folks were in Federal waters in the Tortugas. Not state waters where an OUPV would have been good.

agreed. And with a name and pedigree like he has, I too wouldn't hesitate to book "blind". Most any other random captain, no way. But with him or other guides in his family, I wouldn't expect this sort of thing.
