Default Kings - wire, big mono, or flouro

What do you use for dead bait rigs? Live bait? Our typical rig was main line to a swivel then a short wire to a hank brown hookup. We caught lots of snakes but nothing big. I'm thinking the hardware is hurting us.

Kings require 3 ft of either #2 or #3 single strand wire rigs........unless you are fishing the gulf, #4 wire. Use SPRO swivels since they are so small. 1/0 or 2/0 livebait hook for the leading hook and #4 or #6 4x trebles on the stinger. Fish them with or without shirts.

It's a little early now, wait till the menhaden shows up on the beach. If you're catching small kings, move, the larger fish are not in schools.

Don't know if you even need a swivel if you're fishing live bait...tie directly to wire.

Many guys don't use the swivels like you stated. I like the swivels to minimize line twist....and the fact I hate albright's since I can't tie them correctly.

One more suggestion......I place 15 to 20 ft of 20lb FC in front of the wire. The fc is connected to the mainline (20lb) with a bloodknot or double uni.

If you're experiencing "line twist", you're going trolling too fast.

Of course, I know you are in a Fountain. You might try placing a gold bead (off of your necklace) on the leader to cut down on "line twist"

baypro21... Hank Brown rigs perfect for dead bait. In the summer you don't really need to fish to far off the beach for big Kings. Dallas Rock is good spot.
Tie your Hank Brown to your main line of 20#, add fluorocardon if you like to grab the leader.. no snap swivels. Either unhook King or cut line before barrel swivel & tie another HB on.
Deep Diving Yozuri ( the large size) catch alot of Fish.
Live bait must be able to swim behind boat ... troll very slow.

In SoFla. we use 4 ft 40# flouro, to 8-10" #3 wire to 3/0-4/0 mustad bronze live bait hook, 6" to second hook, same live bait hook or treble....for live baits...

Dead baits, old 3 hook rig , 3, 7/0 mustad 7707 hooked together barb thru eye...for ballyhoo... tie on some christams tree tinsel to top hook.........my fav dead bait rig is 1 oz jig with stinger treble and a spanish sardine or ballyhoo

we have found 3-4 ft wire is a problem as kings slash at baits and will turn long wire leaders in "slinkys" and then kink/break the wire..

I've had kingfish carve the sides off of a trolled ballyhoo then snip the tail right behind the stinger. Didn't even see the line get hit. Reeled it in and there was a post-it note stuck to the hook asking me to troll past a few more times....

So it looks like the general consensus is you need a short wire in front of the rig and it doesn't keep you from getting strikes. I'll keep trying with the wire, I hate to get cut off.
Thanks guys
