Default Hoshizaki Ice Maker Opinions?

Can anyone help me with opinions on a Hoshizaki stainless steel compact ice maker. I want to purchase a small somewhat efficient ice maker for offshore purposes. The unit retails for $1,195 and I got the guy down to $250. It looks to be in relatively good shape. It makes 53lbs per day and hold 30lbs.

I don't really know what to look for specifically so any feedback or comments would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I am in the appliance business and we are considering picking up the Hoshizaki line. I was very impressed with the one that I saw. It had a ss cabinet as well as door. I have been told by others in the industry that it is one of the best. We currently sell u-line, scottsman, as well as G.E. and K/A and Subzero. None of them are perfect. You have to expect to do maintenance on them. And they will all break at some point.

Good Luck. That appears to be a good price from what I have seen.

I have a 600lb/day hoshizaki icemaker downstairs for the boat and a 50 lb machine upstairs for drinks after a day of fishing. Never had a minutes trouble with either machine.

Thanks robbiedon and Yellowfin! It's good to get an opinion as I have very limited knowledge.

I appreciate your feedback!

The only experience with a Hoshizaki I have is the unit they have at my office that serves as an ice/water dispenser in the galley. The ice making portion of the unit is always broken, either the repair men are totally incompetent or the unit is a complete POS. Not sure which, but watching two repair men sitting there staring at the machine and scratching their heads is always good for a laugh. It's the running joke in the office. When its starting to go bad it sounds like its mashing up small animals with all the squealing coming from the machine.

I have no knowledge of the particular unit you're looking at but you might want to check into availability of capable service techs in your area should you need them.

Yellow Fin, do you think that the 50lb model will be too small to generate ice for offshore fishing. I was thinking of bagging some of the ice and putting it in my chest freezer. After you mention that you have a 600lb day ice machine, should I rethink this decision? I typically fill my Frigid Rigid and an Igloo 74qt chest but I will be filling my fishboxes when we start Tuna fishing this year. I hope...

Thanks in advance for your feedback?

It would depend on how much ice you need for the boat. Realize a 50lb maker will only make 50lbs in one day. If you do not mind packing up ice do it. I need 6 54 qt coolers to fill the fish box, drink coolers, and bait box. If you are looking to save expenses, keep buying bag ice, it's much cheaper. If it's convenience get an ice maker.
I enjoy the convenience so much, our new boat will have a 600 lb ice maker on it so I can just dip a bucket and fill the fish box over the fish.

Yellow Fin, why is buying bagged ice cheaper? I figure if I amortize the cost of having an ice maker, it will be cheaper to own. I presently have a 23' boat. I usually fill two 74 quart coolers. One beverages and one bait. What are the cost factors other than water and electricity. The ice make I am looking at runs on 110 and I will only use it June through early October...

What do you think?

I have a 500lb Scotchman. Yellow fin is right. An ice machine is like boating. It is impossible to justify the expense and maintenance when compared to just buying the ice.

Ask when it was last serviced and for what. If the service was anything related to compressor or adding freon-run from the deal. Don't ask me how I know. The cost to repair a freon leak will be more than the $250 that you will buy it for.
My advice is to get the machine checked out by a competent service person.

Hozy make the best machines, but you are buying the convenience-not the ice. My good friend sells all of the brands and he refused to sell me anything but a new machine because of the headaches and anxiety they cause when they break. I bought a used machine from someone else and found out the hard way

I bought my new machine in march. The larger machines are much nicer. It would be a huge pain to have to bag ice everyday to get enough to go fishing. Also keep in mind that the 50lb machine only makes that amount in ideal conditions, when the temp of the water and air temp goes up, it makes less per/24 hours.

Nine of my friends and I bought a Manitwoc 280lb machine used 5 years ago with a 150lb hopper (I think) for $800.. Lasted two seasons, then we bought a new Manitwoc 270lb machine. The Hoshizaki had an excellent reputation when I nosed around for the new one, we bought Manitwoc again primarily because of the bin we had from the old one (they were about $800 alone). You can't go wrong at $300...
Five of us fish, two offshore boats, the rest just drink. Only when we're all going offshore the same time (tournaments etc) do we need to buy ice. A couple notable things:
I did the math once and it cost $300 for water and electric for 5 months. Unlike the old one, it never shuts down completely....
The other thing is the rating.
Our 270lb machine makes that much in 24 hours if its 70 degrees, sometimes in August, I bet it don't do 1/2 that.

These ice machines are expensive to run and they produce quite a bit of heat. You want to think about where you will put it. It will need a drain for the condensate. They are also fairly loud. Depending on how many days you fish. At 250.00 I would probably buy it and give it a shot. You shouldn't have any problems getting your money back out of it.

I've got a 600# Manitowoc. It heats up my garage really bad! But I only have to run it one day a week... It is very convenient to say the least.

Bought one last year, a hoshizaki 300 lb, and was very happy with the unit. The conveinance is great and my neighbor and I split the cost and both got plenty of use from it. That is until hurricane Dennis did his thing to it. We now have a 500lb Hos. on order and will install it a little differently this time. The Hun

I will say you don't use what you don't have. Many times I have filled coolers at home with ice to get shrimp, party, etc, that I could have done without but used because I had it.

Thanks for the feedback! I figured for the convenience and the fact I don't have to stop every morning will be good enough. I picked up the unit last night thanks to your responses. It looks to be in very nice shape. However, now I need to know exactly how to maintain it. No manual, and the guy was in no mood to spend a second more with me as he was originally asking $400. How do I clean the unit? It says that I have to use lime-away and circulate it through the water tank for thirty minutes I believe? Any idea how to do this trick?

Thanks again!!

I have the same ice maker. I found a downloadalbe manual from their website. The manual covers the cleaning cycle. I don't have the url anymore, but I'm sure you can do a google search. Good Luck. Oh yea, I've had mine for five years (purchased used) and it's been fine.

Thanks for the information! I downloaded the info. I also called and they put me in touch with a local distributor as the front lower louver has a small crack. For $9.00 they will send me a new one. I figure since it was the only thing that was remotely wrong I might as well fix it.

I looked at an icemaker and dismissed it on cost/capacity reasons. This season I am strongly considering a 10 Cu Ft chest freezer in the basement for bait and ice (wife prefers I separate bait from the Eggo Waffles ). I was thinking, at the same time I could easily get 8 clear plastic shoeboxes in the bottom of the freezer. Each shoebox could be filled with almost 1.5 gallons of water. I could freeze them and have some decent block ice. Pretty much all I need and a lot cheaper than an icemaker while more convenient than the not so local ice dealer.

Anything wrong with block ice and a pick?

Thanks,
Joe.

After a search on ice machines, I figured I would bring this back to the top to ask my question.

I'm thinking about buying a new ice machine and I cant decided on whether to buy one that makes flakes or cubes.
I was told by a fellow fisherman who has a flakers that they don't melt as fast as the cubes. Is that true?

I have a free standing bin that was given to me. Are these machines universal when it comes to sitting on top of the bins or do they need to be matched up?

I'm concerned that I might have to fabricate something so the machine sits right and seals itself on my current bin.

Any thoughts?
