Check alantani's posts but if you put in the penn upgrade bellvilles in the (()) configuration you will get about as much drag as you can without sending it off to a reel tuning master like Cal, Cofe, or Baker. This should be in the upper 20s to low 30s at strike and way more at full (40+)

Rover,

On my old 30 (plastic wood handle) I got in the high teens (18 or 19). I just bought a 30S from River Marine Supply. Next time I'm on the Cape, I'll measure it for you. I would expect low 20's at strike out of the box.

Alantani published a great tutorial on his 30S...

I am sure he can get mid 20's out of the reel.

Oooops. Alan Tani knows much, much, much better than I do....

Alan said "there was no line on this one, so i had no way of knowing. 30 to 35 pounds would not be unreasonable."

Guys,

I never feel comfortable when Alan feels one thing and my scale says antoher.... I trust Alan more than my scale for two reasons:

1. My Penn 30 is very, very old and I haven't measure my new one yet.
2. Alan has forgotten more about reels than I will ever know.

So who else has real world experience measuring the drag of a Penn 30S? Somebody has to have measure their new one from River Marine....
