Default Need Fin Nor Expert

Does anyone know of anything resembling a good source of information on late model real Fin Nor fly reels? I am very much interested in finding a particular model but I'm not absolutly certain that the reel was actually ever made. I have not been able to find any sort of Fin Nor collector clubs or anything similar so I was hoping someone here might be aware of an old employee or maybe a collector of the reels.

Weeelllll maybe. And yes, I do know someone who did some R & D work on the fly reels.

What is on your mind, exactly?

Doc.

I've been trying to find an Antireverse FR-6. I have seen two advertisements that said the model was made but I've never seen one of the reels. I have an FR-8 and and FR-10, both antireverse, and I'd like to have one of the smaller reels too. I have seen a couple of the direct drive models of the FR-6 and of course lots of FR-8 and 10 direct drives. I have also talked to a fellow who owned an FR-12 Anti reverse, and I wouldn't mind picking one of those up if I ran across one, but the smaller reel is what I'd like to find. This would be about the equal to the old No. 2.

I know a lot about Fin-nor. What reel are you looking for? Let me know, as I am pretty sure I will know if and when it was made.

Like I said, I'm looking for an Anti Reverse FR-6. I have two advertisements which indicate the reel was available in 1991 and I have a parts list for another Fin Nor that I use which hints at the existance of the reel. I expect that if the reels exist they would have a serial number that read "FRCxxxx" with the small x's being the production number of the individual reel.

So tell me, do you know if any were actually made? Like I said, I've never seen one.

I remember them making an AR & DD 4 which was a sailfish/marlin reel. But not an FR6, maybe later in the decade.

Less than 200 of the FR6 A/R's were actually produced. Most of them sold overseas. Less than 100 were actually sold in the US. Slim chance of finding one for sale.

Good Luck

Thanks. Its good to know that the thing was actually made. Sooner or later I'll run across one. Actually the FR-8 that I have is serial number 014 or so. The FR-10 is number 356 if I remember correctly. There never were a whole lot of them of any of them I guess.

Hey Thom,

What line wt is the 6 designed for? Is it a 6wt setup?
I have an older 4.5 that holds a ton of backing and a 14wt sinker. The thing is absolutely bullet proof. I can see your interest in the reels. Nice machinery!

Hello: There is a Fin-Nor FR6 anti-reverse reel that is coming up for auction on July 29th with Mullock Madeley in the UK. Their web address is http://www.mullockmadeley.co.uk and the reel is in Lot #632. I have dealt with this auction house several times from here in New York City, and they can be dealt with very easily over the web. I am bidding on quite a few items in that auction, so if you want me to submit on your behalf, I would be happy to do so (it will also likely save you quite a bid of money since shipping of single items from the UK can be fairly expensive, but I generally get to distribute that expense over several items that I win at their auction, and then it is quite inexpensive to ship the reel on to you (I assume you are here in the States). If you would like me to do so, please contact me directly at ESavage@ReedSmith.com.

Good Luck

I know this is a very old posting, but I thought I should bring it up to date. I posted the original question five years ago but by the time I had made the posting I had already been looking for a FR-6AR for about 4 years. Well, yesterday - after a 9 year search - I found the reel. There was one still on a dealer's shelf in England. The reel had been sitting there undisturbed for about 10 years. It has never been out of the box, in fact the box has never been opened.

So as of yesterday my quest to collect all versions of this fly reel has ended. I have managed to find all 4 of the Direct Drive reels, the FR6DD, FR8DD, FR10DD, and FR12DD. That part was relatively easy, the direct drive reels only took about a year to find. The Anti Reverse reels were much more difficult. The FR8AR was the first one I found and bought, its the most common of the anti reverse reel. By luck I found an FR10AR shortly thereafter and bought it too. I didn't know it at the time but it was a lucky find - I've only seen 2 more of them since. The FR12AR is very rare, I got mine last year from a former employee of the Fin Nor company. Then there was the baby of the lineup, the FR6AR. I was not sure that the reel had actually been produced. Then, as a result of the post I quoted above, the one at the auction in England was found. I was not able to purchase that reel and have not been able to find out what happened to it. But yesterday everything came together. I found the brand new one, contacted the seller to see if it was still available, and then bought it.

So that's it. The set is complete, or at least it will be once the last reel arrives. I'm having a local woodworker make a display case for the 8. I doubt very seriously that there is another full set of these reels anywhere.

I have an old Fin Nor anti reverse fly reel. I bought it in the mid nineties. I'll check which model it is. My son used it bonefishing. It seemed quite small to me at the time.

For those of you who admire the old Fin Nor reels there were a few wrinkles toward the end of the era in Miami. One of them came about without any advertising at all that I'm aware of. Just before the end of the Classic series and the advent of the FR series, they came out with rim control spools for all of the Classics. I think that was during the last year or so of the Classic line. I was lucky enough to get one from them (I did a bit of rod proto typing for them and was also a dealer so I could have reels for the rods I was building back then) for my number two (direct drive) and still have it today. One of these days it will go on the market.

I was sad to see them go since their factory for many years was a fifteen minute drive from my house. These days I hand other makes of reels to my anglers but back in the day nothing beat the Fin Nors (there were a few equal, the Seamaster and Billy Pate), but nothing better. They're still a reel that can be handed down to a son or grandson (or daughter) in as good condition as the day they were first machined out.

Put up some pics of the reels!

The only picture I have at the moment is of 6 of the reels. On the top row in the picture below you will see each of the 4 Direct Drive reels. In the bottom row there are two reels, the FR-8 Anti Reverse and the FR-10 Anti Reverse:

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. Sort of like a mini Sherlock Holmes story. Beautiful collection.
