Ocotal is mediocre for fishing. It used to be much better, but since they extended the national park boundary to include the Bat Islands, it's gone downhill. The prices quoted are a bit off (iow too cheap). A 31ft Bertram operating in the area gets $1000-1100/day, that's fully equipped and lunch included. I didn't see what they were charging for airport transfers either. Liberia Airport is far closer than San Jose. Remember to bring your passport. If it was me, I'd be going to Flamingo.

I was in Zancudo last August for a week. I understand that it's a bit drier up there where you're considering but it's still "green season". When it wasn't raining it was beautiful. But it did rain alot. Of course, that's why we have a rainforest.

I was at El Ocotal about 4 years ago; the hotel site is pretty, way up on top of the mountain overlooking the bay. the hotel had just changed hands and was in turmoil. the service was bad by Costa standards! and the rooms where sort of Holiday Innish. Food was no better than average, went ito playa cocoa alot to eat. it was Jan., fishing was slow, caught a big rooster inshore; offshore 2 sails in a ful lday. And that far north the wind was ripping, might be better in this season. I'd go to Tamarindo if you want a town on the NW coast, further south like Quepos for pure fishing. El Ocotal is convienient to Liberia airpot, though

Personally I wouldn't waste my time in Costa Rica, except in the winter. I'd say go where there's some fish and good accommodations too. Venezuela gets my nod in the late winter and then summer thru fall. Boat I've fished on down there was the Sniper and the Waterman. Excellent captains - lots of white marlin, blue marlin and sailfish. We went out one day on a local boat, Joropo, for swordfish and caught three! Mango Marina, Marina Portofino and the Hotel Ole Caribe have excellent lodgings, food, etc. I'd go there first.
