Default Penn Beachmaster 155L

Please, DON'T LAUGH!!! This is for all you Penn professionals!!!

A friend of mine gave me a new, in the box, Penn Beachmaster 155L - NEVER used. Today, I purchased a Penn Mariner 6'6" rod to use with the reel as a trolling rig. I spooled the reel with 25-lb mono line (it'll take up to 30-lb). My first concern/question is:

1. I've never used an open face reel that doesn't have a line guide. What keeps the line from piling up in one place on the spool? I used my thumb and index finger to balance out the spool while spooling the new line.
2. The "owner's manual" (yep, it's in the box and dated September 1989) talks about the "left side bearing cap" and how to use this to take up any excessive end play.(???) I kinda thought this function was to serve as an "anti-backlash" mechanism but the manual plainly states "not to use it for this function or it will damage both the left and right side bearings." On my first cast - the resulting bird's nest reminded me of my first Abu Garcia from about 40-years ago!!! How in the heck can one prevent such a backlash on this reel during a cast?

After you pick yourself up off the floor from laughing so hard at me - please provide me some advice on these two concerns...

Many thx...
