Default Winter id Officialy Over!

It was 150 Days ago on a cold November night when I slid my last Striper of the season back into the cold Long Island Sound water and told him that I hope to see him again next summer. A lot of time has passed between then and 8:35 this morning when a little Striper gave my Chartreuse Bucktail that TAP-TAP-TAP before I crossed it’s eyes…

I snelled 345 Circle hooks, re-spooled 18 fishing reels, purchased 6 Tuna rods and reels, 6 Squid bars, 8 Daisy chains, made 8 Umbrella rigs, 6 boxes of Berkley Gulp’s and a new (used) 29’ Blackfin! All this excessiveness in a frugal attempt to help myself thru another New England winter…

Well… 117 Schoolies and 1 Catfish later, it’s official… WINTER IS OVER!

We headed out into the 50 degree wasters of the Connecticut River today for 6 non-stop hours of Schoolies just south of the Saybrook RR bridge. There were 6-7 other boats and we all got along without an incident on a sun soaked warm day. We fished until 2 when the rain and clouds and called it a day.

Before heading out, I was a little nervous, thinking I was going to have to travel way up river to find fish. On Wednesday we fished up to Hamburg cove and the only thing we found was a mud flat on the outside of the channel. I reconfirmed the water temps of 47 degrees when I had to strip to my boxers to push the boat off. I don’t know if I would have done that after seeing that ugly catfish I caught today!

I then headed over to my friends house on the Lieutenant River where the Alewives run under his house and saw thousand of our blue back friends heading up stream to spawn. The big girls can't be fat behind!

I drove back to Massachusetts with a big smile on my face knowing I made thru another winter!
