Default TLD's, Before and After

A member from frying pan tower forum sent me these TLD's and asked for a service, drags and to clean them up...

These are the original "made in Japan" TLD's that are about fifteen years old. Not a lot of difference in these and the later ones made in Malaysia. The Japanese ones have a black arm on the stock handle as well as a made in Japan engraving on the reel seat..

So, all the drags in these reels are two sided. And none of these had ever been flipped to the virgin side. so, we did the service using the stock drags. But I let Duane know that the short stubby handle on these reels is their downfall. The longer anodized handle blank (arm) and a nice meaty t-bar will really transform them. That set up is only $29.95.

Ck out these before and after pics...

Cool, I always have problems with the handles on my 50's, would these handles work for those?

Two things involved here...

The handle blank (arm) attaches to the reel to the end of the main gear sleeve.

The molded handle goes on the handle blank. I can put any molded handle on any handle blank, including the stock one on your 50. But the handle blank I have pictured only fits the TLD 20/25.

I am out of the handle blank to fit your 50's, they are being shipped. They will be a little different style, and when I have them they will be $29.95 for the arm and T-bar.

However, the best upgrade is the Shimano TT703 T-bar handle from the Tiagra that sells for $45...

Looks great. I have these reels with both the stock handles and aftermarket, world of difference.

I was considering selling my 2 TLD20's as now they are back-ups and just sit around, but after seeing these handles...I'm reconsidering.

Do you have them in stock?

Thanks,

Do you have any intention of getting a molded handle similar to the Tiagra handle?

That handle is the dog's bollocks but I have used your large molded handle to replace the handle on an old Beastmaster 4/0 handle but don't recall the arm that i bastardized from anothe shimano in my collection. any idea what tiagra or tld handle would fit right onto a beastmaster 4/0?

Greetings Gavin...I wish I knew off the top of my head, but Beastmasters are so reviled because of the defective drags that I just dont bring them in here anymore. Also, the age of those series of reels is such that most anything from Shimano parts is long gone..

Actually, if the reels will turn and go in and out of gear, they are worth salvaging..

I get $28 to do them unless they are really bad inside...

As far as the outside, text some pics to 352 346 877six and I will tell you if you can expect anything decent once the corrosion is gone

The 4/0 is the exception to the rule. It was 20 years ahead of its time with carbon fibre drag material. Unless thou roll over it or bend the main shaft they are a very robust reel IMHO.

The handle i used may have come off a tld30 but I will double check

Hey Rick,

Would having the extended arm and enlarged handle be an issue if cranking while still in the gunnels with a stock straight butt?

Hi - I have some TLD 30s and 50s I'd like to upgrade the handles on. Can you post pics of the one for $29.95 and the one for $45? Are they the same for the 30's and 50s? thanks
