Default Baitcaster Gear Ratios

For saltwater, inshore speckled trout and redfiishing, what is the preferred gear ratio on a bait casting reel.....5.0:1, 6.2:1, or 7.0:1? Why and why not on each gear ratio?

I prefer 5 to 1.

This ratio provides speed when you need, yet has enough cranking power for a bull red IMO.

Ratio's as high as 7 to 1 generally are designed for cranking deep-divers to depth quickly and easily. This is not something that saltwater often do, IMO.

5.3 to 1 is the standard, but I sometimes enjoy my 6.3 to 1 Curados for keeping-up with trolling motor movement while casting the bank for reds.

It would depend on what you are doing, and personal preference.

Good luck!
