Default Penn International 30SW speed shift not working

I just got a 30SW on ebay and the reel is immaculate it looks brand new. When I depress the speed shift button it doesn't stay depressed. I don't think it is changing speeds. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this.

Alan, I'd like to know the answer to this one too. One of my 70VS' is doing the same thing.

Thanks, Alan.
Just to let everyone in. Alan PM'd me to let me know you had to pull out the handle when you press the button on some of the models. He wanted to save me the embarrasment of the whole world knowing I didn't know how to use my reel. I have used some of them on charters before but I don't remember changing the speeds on them.

As always Alan you are a wealth of knowledge and a credit to this board.

twotems, your issue is a little different. sometimes you can push the button down but it doesn't stay down. check out the schematic for your reel....

http://www.scottsbt.com/catalog/stor...0449C5797.aspx

find the two "shift housing screws." they are key # 23 on the schematic. if they are too tight, it might not allow the high speed shift button (key #172B) to hold the low shift button (key #172) in the down and locked position. what you need to do is back off the "shift housing screws" by just a quarter turn, maybe a half turn at most, and that should do it.

let us know. and robbiedon, thanks for being such a good sport! alan

Great description and excellent schematics Alan. I've located the screws and will adjust as necessary on the boat tomorrow. Thanks, you're a a Godsend!!

Alan - That sounds like a wacky design element on the shift buttons on twotems' 70VS. Is it, in your opinion?

Just out of curiosity, do you see that problem much? Also, can the converse happen -- if the shift housing screws get loose from vibration or whatever, can it get so that it won't go into HIGH gear?

I'm wondering whether I'll ever see such issues on my 50VSW...

this spring loaded pin is really not a bad design. i personally prefer the first generation design that robbiedon had. like a stick shift, in or out. no question. with this second generation design, it's uncommon for the screws to back out. this is more of a problem with the shimano tiagra and tld lines. let's face reality. it has become a spring loaded world.

oh, and we still don't know if this will fix twotems problem.

You're right Alan. I didn't really get the chance to try your solution today (I used my lovely TLD50's all day and caught nothing worthwhile!). But I must say that every time I tried to engage low gear on my 70's before it just didn't seem to 'catch'. That's why I'm so certain you've got this problem sorted!!
