Default line for 8500ss?

I am replacing the old 30lb Big Game Supreme on my 8500ss in preparation for the first Cobia trip of the season. I didn't care for the 30 lb. mono on that reel because I almost got spooled by a smoker king last year and think that I need more line. I just wanted to get an idea of what you guys would re-spool with. I have a spool of 25 lb. Big Game that I could use and almost put on there today but I was also thinking about putting some braid on. If you suggest braid, what lb.? I want to use this for cobia, kings, dolphin and occasionally for bottom fishing. I just can't make up my mind what I want to do. I know this is really trivial but I can't decide. What do you guys use? Thanks for the advice.

I recently spooled my 8500SS with 65 lbs. Power Pro. I had it spooled at the tackle shop, it took ~340 yards. That should be enough to know whether you will get the fish to the boat or not.

PP it is 65lbs should be more than enough for a spinner drag

out of the topic since we were on smoker kings
Recently my buddy hooked up a 35pounder king...screaming initial run but nothing afterwards The cool thing was that this guy was on a penn 14/0 with 80pound Maxima line... the king barely affected the line capacity eventhough he ran pretty far
On my 6/0 he would've taken about 3/4 of line....don't you feel good when you're fishing BIG

This king last year was around 30 lbs. and I could see the metal on the spool! He made 2 looooooong runs. That is a big reason for the change from 30 lb. mono. Thanks for the help guys.

I have spooled my 850ssm (newer model) with 500y of 50# PPro. There is even enough space left over for a 10-15y mono topshot if I decide to use it. I am sure that 50# will cover most situations (as compared with 65lb) that you would want to be hooked up with using the 8500ss and a spinning rod, plus you'll get an extra 150y.

20# momoi diamond. Stretch is good for the soft mouth of kingfish.

whatever pound test you decide on, i would definitely have a second spool. yes they are a bit expensive, check ebay.

i prefer power pro. i would do one spool of 50 and one of 65. can't go wrong there.
