Default Best time of the year for a tortugas charter?

Iím looking to THT for a recommendation on when the best time is to take a Tortugas charter. My time window to do this trip is very broad, I could go as early as late February but no later than September or early October at the latest. We're looking to do a 3 day trip and Iíve seen that most 6 pack charters are booked well in advance so I need to make a decision fairly soon.

Throughout my life Iíve fished quite a bit around Florida and other areas of the US, but the Tortugas is part of my bucket list so Iíd like to make the most of it. Any suggestions from those that have been there at different times of the year?

Thanks in advance.

Mark

Yea that one has shot up to the top of my list also. This year i think were going to stay in the key west/lower keys instead of marathon for a week and then run to dt as many times as the ocean will give us through that week.

There are only a few operators with a permit to fish inside the actual boundry, although most of the "Tortugas" fishing is done on Tortuga bank outside of that line. I do not do camping trips down there but routinely run day trips if your choice swings that way. If knot I do know some of the captains that do go and stay down there

Spring can be tough with the winds,,,, then there's hurrican season. I went in May this year,,, goiing again next year. Pully Ridge on the Yankee Capt. It's warm though..... YMMV.

Do a few searches here.... look for Capt. Yuri

Thanks for the advice on timing.

I've read a ton of great reports on FS, and Capt. Yuri is well recommended to say the least, but they're also booked until December 2016 if their site is accurate.

I'm thinking of going between May and September, and will begin making some phone calls after Christmas to check availability with the various charters.

Thanks again and any advice is very appreciated.

june through august is the least rough and fishing is good, although it can slow down when too hot.

december is the best per Yuri, but that is also rough. i like the spring bc it is very good and usually not too rough.

I went on a spearfishing charter on the Playmate last July. Weather was perfect and we filled the boat. We quickly booked again for next year. The captain recommended June so that's what we are doing this year.

Our group did Yuri last Feb and had a blast. Going back this March for some more mutton action. Highly recommend him. He does book up early. You might want to book something for 2017 now.

If you can't find a 6-pack,,, you may want to look at the Yankee Captain. I haven't fished the Tortugas proper with him but know he's a pretty good fisherman so I'm sure he catches. You may want to consider the Pulley Ridge trips he does,,,, they are awesome.

I usually fish with Greg on the Yankee captain 1-2 times a year. I've fished pretty much all different times of the year. Put your time in on the rail and your catch numbers are usually about the same. Fresh bait is key on those trips. Also, if you've never done a trip on his boat, talk to the regulars. It will increase your catch and learning curve 10 fold.
