Default Surf / Beach fishing

Hi all,
Staying with the family mid July at a hotel for a week up at Delray Beach, and would like to try fishing off the beach.

What species are most likely to be close to the beach, and at what time of day? I've seen small sharks in the area past years, btw.

Thinking lead at the end so it carries, a tri swivel towards the lure, and a balloon to keep it on top or mid water and help tracking.

Any chance of success using artificial lures? Maybe mullet imitation lures, gulp, or bucktails. ??

Thanks

Used to beach fish a good bit. A good Florida go anywhere beach rig would be a light spinning outfit 10 to 12 lb, 1/2 oz sinker, bead, swivel, 18" piece of 20 lb mono or floro leader, #6 kale hook. Sand fleas #1 bait, fresh shrimp #2 bait, small cut mullet good in some places. Whiting, sand trout, pompano, permit, little sharks, catfish.

Thanks Raystein.

Where I'm going there's a lot of surf. Thus thinking of going heavier.

Did you use live bait and/or artificial (gulp or another) ?

many different methods including live and artificial bait.

I beach fish out of Stuart all the time. I'm a "lazy" beach fisherman...i drink beer and relax on the beach with my wife while doing my fishing. I usually stick to large live bait as I'm only interested in big fish. I put a slider with weight on the mainline, tied to a swivel to stop the slider, tied to fluorocarbon leader and then a hook.

The reason I left out the # test, length of leader and size hook...it depends what you're trying to do. Since i go for bigger fish, I go heavier. Weight size depends on the waves...lightest pyramid that will hold bottom (somtimes 2oz, 3oz, 4oz). I also put out 3 rods. 1 rod will have 25lb test with a 3/0 or 4/0 hook and small pilchard or pinfish. Rod 2 might have 30lb leader with a 4/0 hook and medium bait. Rod 3 might have 40lb fluoro with 5/0 hook and large pinfish. I usually cast 1 as far as possible, 1 medium and 1 close right behind the break. After that i just drink beer till a rod goes off. Always catch...somedays more than others,,,but always quality fish. Snook, tarpon, big jacks, mackeral, pompano and even bonita. Mostly nice snook and big jacks up to 35lbs even...broken off 100lb tarpon as well.

Artificials are very effective at sunrise and sunset...just too much work for me. PPL use the pompano rigs and they work well for all kinds of fish. Ive caught snook, bluefish, whiting and pompano using those rigs...but like i said, i target larger fish unless the pompano are really thick, then i might change it up.

good luck...ive grown to really enjoy the beach fising
