search for Anthony Mendillo.....runs 3 boats out of Isla Mujeres and is the local legend down there. You are past sailfish season (Jan-March) but I think the White marlin season follows it??

http://www.islamujeressportfishing.c...hp/en/sailfish

Must do activities include.....doing the scorpion/tequila shot at the "corner bar".....enjoying the street scene for dinner....relaxing.

You are not past sailfish season. You just have to wade through hundreds of dolphin, blackfin tuna, bonita and wahoo to get to them. May and June traditionally have the best fishing all year if you like variety and short runs offshore and smooth water. if you don't like sweating a lot in HOT weather, then you are in trouble. The last time I went was a few years back. our best day was 15 sails. 15 or so dolphin (we were only keeping ones over 10-15 pounds and probably released another 10), 2 whites, 15 larger blackfin, a big wahoo and too many freakin' bonito thrown back to count. Sure, its not the same as our 75 raised and 54 caught sailfish day the previous January, but you could get out over the bar every day which is NOT the case sometimes in the winter and we never had to run more than 12 miles or so up the coast. Some of those T-Rex size short, fat dolphins that they have down there will outfight most sailfish. We caught a couple of bulls in the 45-50 pound range that day and us and the boat next to us missed one that our captain and mate said might have been in the running for world records, especially on the 20 pound gear we were using!!!! The ting looked like a blue green surfboard!!!That same day we had a HUGE blackfin in the 35 plus pound range actually mug what would have been our third white and take the bate from him. When we brought the tuna onboard, it had bill marks on his side where the white had slapped him as he went by.

Sent them an e-mail. I think they were featured in Marlin Mag. a few months back.

He is one of the pioneers of the sport fishing biz in Isla. IIRC, his father in law is Enrique Lima, the owner of Enrique's Marina in downtown Isla. He has been in business there since the 60's, before Cancun was even a twinkle in someone's eye.

Take your wife to breakfast at Mangos.

I've stayed at your resort it was nice. Quick walk to the main drag though I agree a golf cart or moped really make the island fun.

Only place I've ever been offered a free bump of coke in a jewelry store.

Corona and bottled water are the same price.

Decent live cover music at El Patio from some singer/songwriter dude named Ryan my wife still has a crush on.

We spear fished or dove lobster from shore every day except one where it was too rough. Walked a mile or so down, got in the water (a little delicate on rocks), swam out to reef edge and let the current drift us north or south depending on the day. Get out an hour or two later when you arrive at a couple different sandy areas.
