Default Mono on Penn 30 VSX

So, yet another one from me ;-)

I've ordered a Penn International 30 VSX (anda 30-80 Tuna Stick). Accordning to Penn it holds 280 yards of #60 mono and 320 yards of #50 lb.

Is that adequate for normal tunafishing ( baiting), or should I go for braid backing?

If I go for a mono topshot, how much braid vs mono should I put on? 50/50, 80/20 or what?

I know I could have gone for a 50 instead, but kinda like to keep it slightly to the lighter side.

600yds of 65lb jerry brown braid and then 250yds of 50lb momoi diamond and you have enough room for a wind on leader.

This is how I have my tiagra 30 wides setup and they hold about the same amount of line.

I use 80 lb spectra and 50 lb Jinkai. I have had to back down on only two fish a 300 lb marlin and a 150 lb marlin that got foul hooked in the dorsal.
I'll let you know how I do with a 100 lb wahoo if I ever hook one. Ditto for a bigger marlin.
The 30s are lighter than the 50's and plenty adequate for 99% of the fish you will catch.

DC14..he's got a 30VSX not a 30VSW....line capacity is quite a bit less. Personally I'd fill it up with braid then a mono topshot....

Depends on the size tuna you are likely to run into. The VSX is designed with braid in mind. You may get 50 wide performance out of VSX using braid, but not using mono. I would say you are better off with the capacity of VSW if you are more comfortable using mono, but given a 30 lb reel, better off with VSX stuffed full of braid for larger ( relatively speaking) fish. No idea where , or how, you fish, but I would guess a linebacker size fish will make of mess of either one, in short order.

The 30VSX is a "narrow" configuration reel, and indeed was designed for use with a mostly-braid line system.
Most anglers go with an 80/20 or even 90/10 setup, and plenty of folks also go 100-percent braid fill, with just a leader on that model.
