Question Line choice on 50 class reel (tuna, wahoo, amberjack etc)

I need thoughts and suggestions for what line to put on my new reel. I intend to use it for tuna out of venice. It is an okuma 50w 2speed.

I have a large spool of 60 lb mono high vis on my 16 and penn senators. I have momoi 60lb mono on my penn 30.

I'm transitioning from inshore to offshore.

I have 130 braid mainline with 200 yd top shot of 80 mono on my 50 wides. Way more line than you will ever need.

How are you attaching your top shot? Bimini to Bristol?

I run the same setup with hollow core. Bristol to a spliced loop. Bimini if it's solid.

I have JB hollow core on my 50s and its too slick for a bristol. On my other reels with power pro I do use a bimini to bristol. With JB I have to splice. (You could do Bimini to Bimini with cats paw).

For what your using it for I'd suggest 80# Momoi mono.

I'd use the 60 you already have.

80lb clear mono is your best option. 60 is fine for tuna and wahoo but is too light for dragging jacks away from oil rigs. We don't use hi-vis down here for tuna because we are chunking and live-baiting.

We use BullBuster 80lb high Vis on our offshore setups! They are more affordable to due to the fact that they sell brand direct to the fisherman. We have put their line up against every test imaginable and it has passed in every situation!

80# braid. I really like the new hollowcore from Seaguar. Check it out. Easy to splice, and will last you a LONG time.

With hollowcore, a splice is quick and easy. If not, I really like bimini to albright.

Useful line test is limited by the drag on the reel. You can put 400 lb line on it, but the drag on that reel makes that meaningless. Lighter line means more capacity. I've got 60 lb on mine Okumas, and hard pressed to put enough drag on it to break the line.

We chunk often and occasionally live bait too. They don't mind the Hi Vis so long as the leader is long. We use the same 30' for chunking or live baiting as for trolling - though sometimes for chunking we need to step down on leader size. Leader to main line via an 80lb or 130lb Spro, depending on line lest.

I bought 120 lb hi vis braid. I already have a large 60 lb mono spool, so I intend to use that. Do I need a long top shot, or can I get away with a wind-on leader. I want this rod to be a double duty so I can rig dish for aj's and I am concerned about having 200 yds of 60 mono on before I get to the heavier braid.

We picked up 2 50IIW Mak's last year and spooled them w/ 600yds 130# JB Hollow topped w/ 250yds 100# Momoi Diamond, pretty sweet little set ups. Loop to loop connection. I've seen the connection pass thru the guides a few times, extremely solid. With the aggressive drag curve on the Maks, you mind as well go with some meaty stuff. Some day you may wish you had it.

I put about 40 yards of 60 mono. I plan to put a Bimini to Bristol to connect the 120 braid. Aj season opens next week, so I may wait on the top shot unless I'm able to troll for tuna in the meantime.
