Default Jerry Brown Solid or Hollow core?

I am looking to spool up the bottom fishing reels and based on posts from this site and going to give Jerry Brown a try. Is there any need or advantage to hollow core versus solid for bottom fishing and wreck fishing in the Gulf?

I have eight trolling rods with 130 JB... nothing better for trolling.

That said, my deep bottom rigs have Suffix 832 or diawi boat braid 80 lb.

Use the solid JB for bottom fishing...less diameter and less expensive. You will have to use a knot to connect more should you break off; hollow can be spliced together.

No need for hollow if you are strictly bottom fishing

We bottom fish in 250 -400 feet and I prefer the jb100 hollow. If you get cut off you can splice in more line with the hollow and I also prefer to splice an end loop and use a wind on
Leader.

Changed out my 80 diawa boat braid solid to Jb 100 hollow and have been very happy. Same capacity or slightly more with the Jb 100 hollow

Nothing wrong with Jb solid, just, prefer the hollow.

wayne, what knots do you use to splice in the leader? I'm working on learning to make my own windons now

Don.t use knots for the leader. Splice a loop in the hollow core braid on one end then splice
The Fluor or mono into the braid to make the wind on leader. Once the mono or Fluor is spliced into the braid you serve the end of the braid/mono/Fluor connection to secure the line.
I use a serving jig from Basil at Bhp tackle. It keeps the line tight making it really easy to serve the connection.

Basil also sells the splicing needles and reverse latch needles to make your wind on leaders.

On solid braid I tie a Bimini twist to make a loop to connect the solid line to a wind on leader.

where do you add a swivel to prevent twist?

Swivel goes on the split ring of jig. Crimp the Fluro wind on leader to the swivel that attaches to the owner split ring on the jig.

On our trolling reels I splice the mono directly into the braid as we use 100 yards of mono
As a topshot. Just crimp a ball bearing coastlock snap swivel to the mono and use chafe tube on the mono loop.
For tuna fishing we put a 3 Inch squid on the main line above the coastlock snap swivel
To hide the swivel.
We attach our spreader bar, wire or mono/Fluro leader to the coastlock snap swivel with a
Crimped swivel, usually a spro 230lb .

I just use wind on leaders for our jigging, popping and bottom fishing rigs and splice
Mono directly into the braid on our trolling outfits

Is it hard to splice it? For some reason I'm uneasy about it.

Just pull it through with a needle or a doubled piece of single strand wire, 30 ft if you'd like a long 2X line.

Very easy to splice and 100 percent connection strength

Here is a video by Blackwater that shows you how the splice works. When you make a wind on leader you splice the mono or fluro into the braid on one end and then splice a loop into the braid on the other end. You splice a loop on your main line braid and connect the wind on leader with a loop to loop connection.

I use a BHP tackle Jig when serving the mono/fluro connection in the braid. It keeps the line very tight and makes it easy to serve the connection
