Default Los Roques Venezuela

My wife and I will be taking a trip to Los Roques Venezuela for mainly some DIY bonefishing mixed in with some diving (Feburary 2015). We are well traveled and look for unique quiet places rather than luxury stays.

If anybody would be so kind as to steer us in the right direction for places to stay, cost, boat availability to get to other islands to fishing etc. We would be greatly appreciative.

Regards,

I know people who used to keep their boats down there. They claim the political and economical situation down there is terrible even in Los Roq. Question is there are so many other places to go why this place?

We have traveled all over and this place looked interesting. Los Roq. is touted one of the best places in the world for Bones/diving and we were hoping to find a place with a less crowded tourist presents . (for instance, belize ambergris caye, keys etc).

I tend to do a lot of research and I have to admit there was not a ton of info about Los Roq which seemed unsettling.

What suggestions would you have for a off the radar place to DIY sight fishing/dive.
Thanks

If you are flying into Los Roques fly by Aerotuy(Dash-7 Turbo prop) avoid Chapi Air or others flying on Piston BN2 or Trislanders. I would stay at Arrecife ( call Mauricio Legory) they have a Dive center and will arrange your fishing trip.Very nice posada at Los Roques and great people.

Thanks for that info....VeneMarlin. but I do have to say that based on Wadill's comment - I did do a Travel advisory alert search and as of June 4th 2014 the US con. has put a major alert on Venezuela as a whole. What are your thoughts on he situation??

Thanks

If you're looking at 2015, I'd wait until the last minute. Black market rates on the Bolivar are/were 80-1 as of a week ago. The Government published rate is 6.3-1. Airlines serving Venezuela are dropping service like flies because they can't get their money out of there. Latest count of money owed to airlines is approaching $4 Billion dollars. The place is in collapse.

Have you looked at Chetumal Mexico for off the grid Bone fish fishing? How about Christmas Island?

The Andros I'm afraid would be a little chilly in Feb. for my wife (she would prefer hot). But after all I read about Andros - I think a March/April trip is calling my name in the near future.
Actually, I think we are focusing on Sian Kaan for a little DIY sight fishing and we'll take trip to 1 or 2 trips to Cozumel for some drift diving.

thanks you

That is some amazing news.....it certainly seem like a long term situation. Going to have to shelve los Roq. Chetamul is great suggestion and I plan to move over there from Sian Kaan. I will have a Jeep so moving around will not be an issue.

Thanks for your suggestions

I've flown over many times and from the air it looks like a beautiful place. I've spent my share of time in VZ, but would not go now due to the political environment. If you do end up there it is true what Classic say about the exchange rate. Buy B's on the black market and pay cash for everything.

Just imagine all these activities in crystal clear, turquoise water, with perfect wind and you’re the only one on the water – definitely with your buddies. This was everything I ever dreamt of and I wouldn’t have expected it to really be SO damn good.
that place is beautiful

The snorkeling and diving on the reef around providencia/San Andres in Western Caribbean is worth doing. If there at the right time the crabs all close the roads down with their migration from the trees to the ocean to drop eggs-very cool to see. Not many tourists on providencia, but San Andres is a trap.

I've been dying to go to Los Roq to Kitesurf, it's a dream destination but the I understand the political environment is a absolute mess. Getting there requires a trip through Venezuela which is beyond dangerous. I'm not hearing good things about crime now even in Los Roq. Everyone I've talked to says it's a no go right now.
