Braided line and live line tangles

When I'm running live bait on a ballon with 5' fluro leader I'm getting a tangle at the swivel.

Is there anyway to prevent this? I'm thinking a longer topshot?

yes. longer topshot will HELP prevent the tangles. How much top shot are you using now??

I think that's my problem. It's more of a leader than a topshot. About 5 feet.

I'm afraid I'll loose casting distance if I have leader to the reel.

Do not tie braid to the swivel. Top shot to the swivel, then to the leader. If you are flatlining, no swivel at all.

What size topshot? How long? Mono or flouro?

What side for the leader (I'm using 60 flouro)? Recommended knots ?

I'm with you on the flat lining. I just use my flouro leader and a hook.

Thanks for the replies :tht_rulez:

For flatlining I usually just use a 5-8 foot leader tied directly to the braid. 5 turn spider hitch to a Bristol knot. No swivel at all. Sometimes I'll Albright a short section of wire on if the kings are around, again no swivels.

If you want to use a top shot, you can run 15-20 feet (or however long you want it) of mono then tie your mono/Fluro leader to a swivel, and that should cut down on your tangles. A uni to uni or Albright will work if you want to attach your leader with out a swivel.

I'll try this. Thanks:thumbsup:
