If lure trolling I would stick with the Tiagra, for bait&switch I think the freespool of the Talica is much better and being lighter helps me out moving around with the rod in hand trying to have the Blue Switch from the teaser to bait.
I will be doing a multitude of both. We often fish lures with 2 80's and 4 50's. I have some custom rods that have the exchangeable Aftco butts. Have you ever put the Talicas on a bent butt setup? For some reason I feel that they would t perform the same way.

Why wouldn't they? Reels are pretty simple when you get down to it. Gears, a spool and a drag system.

I would think that there might be a problem with 80lb braid going through the Winthrop rollers. I might be wrong.

Well that has to do with a mono vs braid argument. I believe Winthrop rollers are braid friendly.

The reels should have the same capability. They have similar line capacities, the only difference being the tiagra has the cross bar on the top and the Talica being "topless" but still rated for higher drag. The only concern I would have would be torque of the frame fishing extreme drags over a long fight.

That's a good point about the torque on the frame. What size braid are most people running on the 50 Talicas. I would like to run 100, but with Hollow Core it might be better to run 80, for capacity reasons.

Jerry Brown 100 is smaller diameter than 80.

Never used the Talica on the bent butt, I'm only using it for bait&switch where I prefer the straight rods but can not imagine any issue with it.

Like I sayd before the Tiagra 50WLR is small enough for fighting standup, more line capacity that on trolling lures you sometimes will need (clearing all the teasers plus other rods on the water) and it has proven that can take a lot of abuse and continue working flawlessly year after year.

On Bait&Switch usually I have less stuff to clear from the water before engaging/fighting the fish (just teasers) so the Talica 50 lesser line capacity is not a big issue (at least up until now) and the lighter weight plus better freespool helps me out on the switch but it is not time tested, (only one season fishing with it)

For this next season I'll probably get another Talica 50 so I can have another angler trying to hookup the fish at the same time, but if trolling lures with hooks I'll go back to the 5 Tiagra spread.

Yeah, I think I'm going to get two of each. That way, I can still fish lures with the tiagras (new and previous ones) and also try out the Talicas. What line would you recommend putting on them?

Well I use mines essencially for Blue Marlin, our average fish size should be around 550lb but it can go all the way up to grander size that is why I spool the reels with 80lb mono topshot and hollow braid backing, I might need the capacity and I shurelly need, from time to time, to increase the drag on stubborn fish that when near the boat don't want to come up.

Yeah, I think my tenuous plan (subject to change) is to order 2 50 Talica's and 2 50W tiagras. I will spool the talicas with 100lb JB Hollow Core and have a 80lb topshot. The Tiagras I will have 60lb Ande, unless somebody can convince me otherwise and to put braid backing on them.

Default Talica vs Tiagra

I recently used the Talica 50 and found it to be very light. It had an awesome drag. The downside is - It is a lot smaller for fighting bigger fish from the chair. The space for "thumb drag" is limited and the size of the reel was too small for my XL hands during the fight for a 500 lb blue.

I like the reel but it will take some getting used to...

Buy the talicas and don’t look back.

Yes have a friend that uses the Talica with Bent Butts on a regular basis, here is a video on a proper size Blue Marlin
