Default Surf Fishing in Akumal, Mexico

Has anyone got any information/experience surf fishing in the Akumal/Half Moon Bay area?

Things Like...
- What type of rig should I be slingin?
- What should I expect to encounter?
- Where might I find bait after I have arrived in Mexico?
- Any recommendation on a cheap travel surf rod?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

I tried to catch bonefish with a flyrod but didn't find any. There are good looking flats but it is difficult to find the fish unless you have local knowledge. Access can be difficult as the area is very built up. In theory, the shoreline and beach are public property but you have to get there.
If you want to catch fish, hire a Pangero (local fisherman) to take you out. Likely catch would be snapper, grouper, barracuda and bonefish. Ask about ciguatera, you don't want to ruin your vacation by eating a bad fish.

Spent ten days catching bones (and a lot of other stuff) blind fly casting from the beach just north of there - Xpu Ha, x beaches. Any crazy Charlie or shrimp imitation worked great. INTERMEDIATE LINE, not floating. Huge school of large permit as well.
