Default Newburyport MACKS??

Looking to catch some Macks for live lining this weekend.

Any advice (gps #'s) on where to go/what time of day to get the macks off Newburyport?

After I catch them, advice on where to go to live line them? Usually I'd drift in river toward mouth but it may be a bit hectic in those waters on a saturday afternoon.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hey Firefly,

I fished this weekend out at Stellwagon and had NO problem finding Macks all the way out there, GO out to some deep water 100-200-300 feet and start gigging or trolling (very Slowly) with the Sabiki rigs between 10-50 feet down. As soon you hook with one, just hang around that spot and gig. If you have a good sounder you can find them that way. You can chum for the Macks too to help keep them around with some minced bait or cat food (fisherman platters works nicely ), I always have the best luck catching Macks at sunrise, but they were everywhere on Sat.

Whenever I fish Ipswich bay, I like to hug the 180 line (180 foot Contour line on the chart) that runs from Gloucester out the Jeffery’s Bank. It all depends on the Weather , but if you have live Macks than you are halfway there!

Good Luck !

I fished out of Newburyport on Friday the 24th. Got into MACs a couple of miles out due east from the mouth (where there are lobster traps on a slight rise) using Chum and Sabiki rigs. These were huge MACs so it didn' take long to fill the bait well. The chum was important. Boats with chum were getting MACs, without were getting none.

I'm going Sunday (June 2) and will try around the farthest outside buoy before going out to the same spot. There will probably be MACs everywhere soon.

I'll be there early Sunday AM.

Low tide is around 11:30 on Sunday. Get there early and fish the outgoing before the rush :-)

Door #3- Thanks for the info.

I'll be out on Sunday as well- plan on hitting breaker rocks off salisbury for the macks.

chum- I hear I should use some cat food. What do you use?

Since tide is low at 11:30, where will you fish the macks if you don't mind me asking?

btw- I'll be launching from cashman and will be in a 19ft key westt cc

FireFly,

I double checked, and the low tide is more like 11:50 AM so you get an extra 20 minutes.

I usually make my own chum by grinding up last years frozen herring and macs and freezing them in a ziplock. When I use it, I just put the frozen chum in a wire mesh thing I made and let it slowly melt in the water. It makes an excellent slick. I haven't done that yet this year. I purchased some at the bait shop last time.

I'll also be launching at Cashman and have a 23ft Aquasport with Yamaha 200 Saltwater. I'll fish wherever I can find good current movement and the ability to drift. Probably out at the mouth. If I can't drift I'll anchor near a rip...

See you Sunday (unless the wife veto's the fishing trip) :-)

The macs are at the Speckled Apron about 3mi @ 99degrees from the mouth. You'll see lots of lobster gear.

Chum them up.

I'm not sure if they are there yet, but later in the season I always find mackerel at the Hampton Shoal Ledge, a few miles north of the mouth of the Merrimack. You'll see other boats there for sure.

Thanks guys- It looks like the hampton shoal is close to breaker rocks?

I really appreciate all the info- taking a client out on Sunday and want us to be able to catch a few fish.

Never had a boat capable of getting out of the mouth until this year so I'm pretty excited to do some live lining.

Good luck fishing this weekend!

FireFly,

Did you go out? I bagged it because it looked too windy.

I bagged the trip out of the mouth. Stayed on joppa and had a great day- only used the fly-rod. It was a very productive day.
