Default Catching bait Question?

Has anyone ever tried to catch bait (mullet, herring, blue runners, etc...) with a cast net in deep open water? I was wondering if it was possible to catch biat with say a 10' 1.5lb. 1" net in open water ( ie - NO BOTTOM) over 100'???

Thanks!

Yes.
A one incher with a lot of lead will sink and close fast, some fish will get gill stuck, and the draw strings will close the bottom trapping others.

Works on mullet, sardines, and google eyes here. Can't vouch for other species found in the gulf or eat coast.

I would not waste anytime trying to cast net in deep water........bring sabikis like everybody else.......there is a reason you do not see anybody throwing a net in deep water - the bait sound too fast to make this an effective practice.

Sabikis for herring and hardtails. Mullet in 100'? I rarely see them in water over 6' unless they're running a wall or something.

I was running in about 65 ft of water a couple of weeks ago on a glass day. Not a ripple any where until I found myself surrounded by millions of greenies of the surface. HUGE schools everywhere as far as the eye could see. Tried (for the fist and last time) to net them with a 6 foot net and a 12 foot net. Would run right up to a school until on top of them and throw net only to watch them swin easily under the net and go on their way. Gave up after 10 min. Started throwing a sabiki rig and had 50 baits within 10 minutes. Save your strength and time. Get a couple of sabikis.
