Default Clean & Lube for Shimano TLD 15

My TLD 15's have not been serviced in 4 yrs, and I have never done it myself--but would like to. Are they simple enough to open, clean away the old lube and add new? what kind of lube should I use?

They don't free spool well....thanks for any hints from the experienced.

It is very tricky to reassemble the lever drag mechanism properly. You can use any thin waterproof grease such as Penn reellube or Reel X grease. But given how long it's been, i would send them off to Shimano USA in Irvine, Cal. for service (do not use one of the warranty centers!!!). They do a great job and often upgrade components for free. In fact, they have never charged me even for repairing reels out of warranty and turn around time is very fast.

my local reel shop does a clean and lube on my TLD 15's for about $13 a reel. For such a nominal expense you might want to check with a reelsmith before trying to open and put back together a TLD yourself.

Decision made...either way doesn't sound as easy as opeing my Mitchell 300 when I was a teenager! Plus, I thought it would cost $30 each...I will probably search for a shop in the Charlotte or Southport/Oak Island area in order to minimize the time I'm without the reels. thx for the feedback.

Shimano has a 6-8 week turn around time for service right now. The TLD 15 has a problem with the free spool. Shimano told me the graphite side case swells because of the oil. They will fix for free, but you will wait
