Default Flouro leader vs Flouro line

Is there a difference between flourocarbon leader material and the flourocarbon lines? I wondered this as I was making 2' to 10' leaders. The leader material runs about $9 for 25 yards, while the line comes in 250 yard spools for two or three times that.
I was thinking about substituting the yo-zuri hybrid for leaders too. Any thoughts? This is for inshore and near shore fishing only.

This is by no means an expert opinion, but I buy the line in bulk and make leaders out of it.

I use this for fly fishing so you know it should work on off shore applications.

It was running me like $2 for a 10ft flouro fly leader. I bough 250 yards for $9.99 and make my own- any size I need.

I use Vanish for leaders and think it's the same as the leader material. If Vanish came in heavier tests, I'd be happier

In the same brands there is no difference except:
the size of the spool, the cost, and the marketing program.

Thanks, I thought that might be the case. I am going to buy a larger spool rather than using the mini spools up every weekend.

I also use the large spools for my leader material but my only problem is I have not been able to find the 200/250 yd spools in any thing larger than 25 lb test diffinently saves money.

i am a firm believer that leader material should be made tougher and more abrasive resistant than regular fishing line. If it isn't, why not just tie all your hook directly to your line? All of the FC leader materials i have used are relatively stiff, at least above 40# test, and i think they hold up to abuse better than regular mono leaders, and definately better than line manufactured for fishing reels. The FC fishing line made for fishing reels is going to be much softer to reduce reel memory and increase stretch, for better casting, etc. Its properties are different from FC leader material. I guess if your talking about using it in lighter line classes you probably won't notice a difference, but when you get up to 40-150lb test, you should notice a difference between your leader material and your fishing line, including FC and regualr mono.

Sounds great guys...

Now where the heck do I buy a spool of 80lb flourocarbon line in the Mobile AL area?

tried the marine stores.. nuttin... and of course the chain stores here (W*Lm*RT and target) don't have it either. So, where to look, and what's a reasonable price for 250 yd spool ? 20 bucks? more? less?

In tests above 20 lb, I have only seen fluorocarbon in leader size packs.

Different brands of fluorocarbon have different qualities just like different brands of monofilament, and the BPS brand of fluorocarbon is not a good brand to use in saltwater. Reason: It is very supple and not abrasion resistant, and is better suited for freshwater applications. On the upside, due to its suppleness, the BPS brand is very easy to tie knots with.

I use 20 pound and 14 pound vanish for inshore leaders. The results are quite good for inshore fishing. The Vanish brand seems to have a tough coat which resists abrasion well for the pound test.

I make Sabiki rigs out of the 14# Vanish and they hold up better than regular mono.

But Vanish doesn't work for me on the reel. Way too stiff for me.
