Default Tons of Mahi Sat. Sun. at the Big Rock

We put lines in waaaayyy North of the Big Rock at a little past 8am after a hard 3 hr ride from Beaufort. First line in was a nice mahi... and it stayed that way all day. We had a lot of multiples with 4, 5 or six fish on. Caught 8-10 hoisters(some of which should've been gaffers, but the gaffs were all busy at the time!) and 30-32 nice gaffers. Four of those would have totalled easily over 100lbs. One close to 35lbs. Quit fishing at 1pm with 5 fish on trolling tackle and one on the spinning tackle. All coolers and boxes were full and the crew were beat... Headed in w/ another 3hr ride. Stopped fishing somewhere offshore of the Far East Tanker and came thru the slot.

Nice meeting you Bluewaterbandit.

Good Job JIM!!

Went back out Suday and the N wind had messed up the weedline and the fish just were NOT as ravenous as they were Sat. Managed 8 decent mahi, and missed 5 or 6 more.

My last trip.. gotta give it up... my back will NOT allow it anymore,, at least it was an awesome trip!

Thanks Dad,, Mark... I really enjoyed our adventures!!

Fished with Mark Miller (Offshore 3144) and Tommy Arnold (Tarnold) on Tommy's boat Sunday in the Far Out Shoot Out. It was a slow day. We finally boated six Mahi, three of which were good sized (officially weighed at 18+ lbs) and lost one really nice one at the boat. We also had one undersized YFTuna. We fished from the Steeples to the BlackJack Hole to the 100/400. I can't recall for sure but I think most of the fish came from around the 100/400.

We were 20+ miles up the stream from the BR.. Actually ended up offshore of the Far East tanker. The bite was so fast and furious that the stream just carried us up there. We would have fish on all the lines, land them, and then have to spend a few minutes resting and rerigging ballyhoo. Then we would just jump to the other side of the weedline(wind kept blowing us to the cold side and there were NO mahi there.), put lines in and 1/2 the time we couldn't get all 5 in before 1, 2 or all of them would get bitten.. Really amazing. We had a couple mahi pull drag on 50's and still run over to another bait and swallow it,, both rigs would be in their guts.. They were crazy hungry!!

DJ,
With you going down for a while, I'm going to have to take applications for someone who is a professional baiter, you might say a Master of the trade. Your going to be a tuff act to follow

Don't worry before long you will be hearing these words again..... DJ flatline, DJ longrigger, DJ short right

Well, I hope u find someone better than me,, for sure. But maybe i won't get permantly replaced!! We've had a lot of success together and I enjoy hanging w/ you and the family even when not fishing. Maybe things won't be as bad as it looks,, but it seems that i'll be having 2 surgerys in the near future

Lets see in the past year there has been a few bluefin tuna, more mahi than you can shake a stick at, some yellowfin, a white marlin, bonita and false albes, more kings than I care to admit, blues and spanish on the beach, black bass and other misc bottom dwellers...what am I missing?

Yeah, I would call that succesful. Oh crap, I just realized you might miss the hatteras trip this year. Dang it.

Trust me I won't permanently replace you, I have to have someone giving me a hard enough time that it keeps me straight. I'll be looking forward to the smell of smoked oysters and hearing "Alright Jim, put us back on the fish"

Fished all last week up at Harkers Island and managed to smoke the Spanish, bluefish and sea bass with Rainmaker and his son on Sunday. Even caught one nice bonito which tasted awesome on the grill that night. Sunday looked absolutely awesome as far as conditions go, however several folks who went north of the BR around the 620's and had a very slow day. Slim pickens was the word back at the dock. The inshore bite sure was fun. The VHF reception on Sunday was simply amazing. I talked to my buddy up along the 620 north of the BR, while I was trolling near AR 315 and it sounded like he was in the back of my boat. Must have been close to 37-40 miles. Dang VHF's, don't ya love em!!

Yeah, we did the same SeaWitch.. Heard a lot of chatter about guys hooking up(we were thinking mahi or tuna) and then they would come back and say it was blues or spanish. At least you know that if you need help there will be SOMEONE within range than you can contact.

Jim,,, someone's gotta keep you in line out there or there's no tellin what will happen! It's always fun to give each other a hard time whenever they slip up especially if it's all in good nature. Keeps you alert but there's no (negatism) if you know what i mean. If the fish don't keep you busy, i will!! lol. Maybe things will get back on track and we can go back to the normal routine. I sure would hate for my dad to have to sell his boat just because i can't help with the trips.. it's something he's always wanted and i don't wanna be the final straw to breaking that dream! Oh well.. keep the reports coming,, and keep in mine, i may still want you to make those rigs up for me...

SeaWitch,

I was at the Big Rock on Sunday (only caught one undersized YF) and noted the same thing about the radio. I was hearing chatter between boats that were at the rock jetty...clear as a bell. It was really odd and I've never experienced reception like that.

We did manage to catch some really nice sea bass and triggers at my favorite "trigger hole" near 14 buoy. We heard about the bite north of the rock, but I just could not make myself go any farther offshore.
