Default bail won't close automatically

The bail on my fishing reel won't close after I cast. I would like to know how to fix it. The first few casts it would snap shut when I started reeling. Now it won't.

Brand and model of reel?

Check the schematic that came with your reel. Look for the bail spring and replace it. Could also just need some lube at the bail pivot points. I always close my bail manually and haven't had to replace a bail spring in 20 years. Do it enough times and it'll become second nature. Reels seem to last longer for me since I started manually closing the bail ................... and buying Shimano.

find the big screws on either end of the bail. back them off about 1/32nd to 1/64ths of a turn and add a few drops of corrosion x. make sure that the screws are not so loose that they will now back out on their own. let me know if that does the trick.

sorry i've been maintaining such a low profile here. bad flu, still sick as a dog.......

I agree with the recommendation to close the bail by hand. It'll increase the life of your reel by at least 50 percent.

I also always close my bails on spinning reels by hand. I read/saw somewhere that this decreases line twist and I have been doing this for years.

Watch closely on some of the fishing shows and you will see some of the pros do this as well.

Close the bail by hand...saves wear and tear on the parts...

I'm a genius. It's so simple even a simpleton like myself figured it out! A spring-like lever inside the casting the bail attaches to is tripped by any one of four cams that are part of the reel housing. If you don't get the bail parts together just right, the lever will not swing out far enough to contact any of the cams and the bail won't shut. Just had to be fussier about assembly.

Get a Zebco 303 instead and you won't have this problem.
