Drydoc,
I have an old 302- no handle, no bail. You can have it for free. I love those old things too.

I also have an old 488 I used last summer catching jumbo reds in the Neuse River. You just can't find a spool that big these days, casts better than anything else! One problem I had though, when a drum makes a run, if the spool is all the way down the line rubs against the spool skirt. Never lost a fish though.

Email me your address. phubert@alltel.net
ps If you have a working 300, I'd love to get one.

I have a 302 that I just had re-spooled with 20 lb. line, works great. I also have the origional Garcia Companion Heavy Surf Action Rod.
What are these things worth?

phubert...thanks so much, and i will email you
my address....can you send it cod?...also, if
you fedex it, i will reimburse the full amount
at once for you....and yes, i also have dealt
extensively in 300s, and just gave away my last
one to a nephew...sorry...i thought the 300 was
wonderful...i always fought fish in the freespool
mode to overcome the obvious frailty of the drag..
never lost a fish, including ocean fishing for
bonito, mackerel, barricuda, halibut, and seabass
...i did get spooled by a yellowtail, however, now
that i think about it...i always used 4-6# and
found that with FRESH line each trip (get 1/4 lb
spool from cabela) plus the crawford knot ( i was
a disciple of the FISHING FACTS/NIGHTCRAWLER SECR
ETS cult of the late 60`s), i had the ultimate in
sport experience...i do think, in retrospect, that
yellowtail off san clemente island was a bit over
confident! dan

brade,

i would very much like to take on your reel
as a rebuild....i would think $25 for the reel
only??...i can forward you the money including
fedex to send it... dan

Drydoc.
I sent that baby through the US mail this morning. I sent it COD, I think it'll be around four bucks. Glad to find a good home for it, it was just collecting dust here. I hope you catch some whoppers on it. chip.

Thanks for the offer for the reel, however I think I'll hold on to it for awhile. Was just curious regarding the worth.

I must admit I've had Mitchell spinning reels most of my fishing life. NO MORE. I've relegated them to the trash heap and will not buy another. Too much FRENCH history involved in that product for me to even stomach looking at it anymore.

Too bad really as I had many fond memories and caught many fish as a kid fishing with the venerable 300. Can't ship my old reels to any of you guys as they are are in the garbage dump now. Looks like I'm down to Penn, Fin-Nor or Shimano for spinning reels.

Dan,

I can't help you on the 302's, but I have a couple of questions if you don't mind.

I have several 300's in various states of repair. Most purchased in the '60s I think. Are parts still readily available for those reals? A couple of them have corrosion on the body of the reel. Can they be satisfactorily repainted?

swordfish...remember pearl harbor too!

kelly...try coastal service at (919) 736-3859...
also, many tackle stores have junk bins, and
300s are common....call several full-service
tackle shops and ask to purchase 300s in any
condition...i just now (3min ago) called a good
tackle store and they had a good cond 302 without
the handle, but coastal had the handle!...voila`..
if you called around and flash your credit card
they will ship you a bunch, from which you can
rebuild one or two good ones...i am 7 from 10 at
the moment for 302s....painting???...timely, i
just got one which is completely rebuilt except
the frame is badly pitted....coastall has no
frames left....the easy way is wet sand (only the
small area of the exterior) the thing, rinse in
strong solvent du jour, and prime with zinc chro-
mate followed by enamel...tempo makes a good black
for mercury outboards as well as the primer....the
primo would be to sand then etch with phosphoric
acid, then prime with interlux aluminum primer
matched to their BRUSHABLE ("interthane plus")
polyurethane.....the first route is quick and
can be repeated often...the second will be bullet
proof forever....with much more work and much more
money...i am going to do the quickee and hope i
come up with a good frame on a reel which i fla-
blatzed in some different way....dan

Very good condition, only flaw is a scratch on the side plate. I could send pics if interested but I would ony trade for any Penn Z in good cond. The reel is from my late uncle, he served in WWII and won a purple heart.

After typing that I want to keep it, lol! I won't use it though or appreciate it, I love Z's!
Willing to trade if interested.

Tight lines.
