Default how do you guys bleed.

Your catch that is.

I am wondering what is the best way to bleed your catch, or if you have different ways for different fish. The reason this comes to mind is, after a recent tautog trip, when it came time to fillet the fish one side was loaded with blood, the side it was laying on. Just wondering whats the best way to bleed them, thanks

the answer to how to bleed is probably going to depend on species...but you mentioned a tog, and that's something i've caught more than a few of. and cleaned. and eaten.

i've never bled one, never even thought about it. yes, i've seen one side of the meat a little discolored, but it's never affected the quality of the meat. i suppose it's got something to do with bruising, but i can't imagine a tog having enough blood in it's body to be an issue. add to that the fact that the tog is a cold water, relatively non-moving fish, and the idea of the temperature getting up after the relatively short fight (most are in the boat in a couple of minutes) can't be much of an issue. would love to hear some scientific advise to the contrary.

i'm sure you'll get plenty of other posts on other species.

Most fish will benefit from bleeding. One very important thing is not to let a fish flop around and get bruised. Tuna need bleeding. Turn on back or just stick bleeding knife, short blade flat point very sharp home made, into ares just behind pec fin. Blood should gush. We hook a seawater hose to the mouth and let the fish bleed. Do not penetrate heart. Cut tail ligaments so no "tuna tango". Bigger Bluefins need spinal tap before ice down. Any fish can be bleed in sim1lar manner. Just don't cut into heart or the fish looses blood pressure before the blood gets pumped out. On smaller fish just a little slash under the throat should do the trick.

Easiest way to bleed a blue or a tautog is to simply rake one side of the gills. Take you bait knife and run it up and under one side of the gills. Once you have raked the gills, throw the fish in you motor well or in an empty fish box. A big blue will bleed a lot and make a serious mess, if left on deck. The fish will usually bleed out in a couple of minutes. Then throw them in a cooler or fish box with ice and saltwater. Take the tautog home for the grill and the blue home for the garden.

Cod fish taste better if bled/gutted/iced immediately, plus guts make great chum.
For cod, I hold them upside down, cut down at a slight angle away the head starting from the point of the 'V' that meets below the gills (it cuts like butter if you do it right, and the blood from the heart being cut in half should give a good squirt). Then I gut them them cutting from the vent hole up.

CB... why wouldnt large yellowfin or bigeye benefit from a brain spike? Just wondering.
As for bleeding most do... but I know One guy in the medical field who believe otherwise... but he is def in the minority.

I like the idea of the hose in mouth trick....
